Plymouth State University students from unrecognized sorority arrested

PLYMOUTH - A group of concerned students and Plymouth State University's prompt response to illegal hazing activities have resulted in five off-campus arrests.

University Police investigated the hazing allegations after several students stepped forward with their concerns on Oct. 31. Further investigation by University and Plymouth police resulted in four PSU students; Meagan Ford, 21, Amanda Gomes, 21, Alana Hokans, 21, and Jillian Sargent, 21, and one former PSU student, Ashley Thomas, 21, being charged with a variety of crimes on Nov. 7 for their alleged actions associated with hazing. The New Hampshire State Police and New Hampshire Highway Enforcement officers also assisted with the arrests and the related search warrants."

The University is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment in which to live and learn," PSU President Sara Jayne Steen said. "We take these charges very seriously."

In order not to compromise the ongoing criminal investigation, the specific details of the allegations are not being made public, and the warrants and affidavits have been sealed by the Plymouth District Court. Additionally, pending the outcome of the investigation, the University will pursue appropriate administrative disciplinary actions up to and including suspension."

Hazing by students will not be tolerated by the University," PSU Vice President for Student Affairs Dick Hage said. "The reported actions by these students were dangerous and irresponsible and the charges levied are an appropriate response to this kind of behavior."

Those charged are scheduled to be arraigned in Plymouth District Court on Dec. 18.
