Players
1.Zara Jakubas, Tennis (Ranked 1st last issue): Jakubas has had a tremendous junior campaign for PSU, as she is 9-0 in singles matches, and also has a 9-0 in doubles play for the tennis team. With two of the next two meets for PSU being against teams with undefeated records in conference play, it will be interesting to see how Jakubas plays against both Rhode Island College and Bridgewater.
2.Nikki Garvey, Field Hockey (2nd last issue): This week’s “:10 seconds” player had two big goals in a 5-3 win over Eastern Connecticut State University last weekend. Garvey also had a fantastic game against the University of Southern Maine, as she had the game-winning goal in overtime to go along with an additional goal and an assist. Shehas had a strong 2014 season, as she is tied for second in the Little East with 27 points this season (11 goals, five assists).
3.Sunny Jakubas, Tennis (Unranked last Issue): Like her sister Zara, Sunny has had a fantastic 2014 season. Sunny is 8-1 in her singles matches, and has been named Little East Conference Rookie of the Week on multiple occasions. Only three games are left in the regular season, as the start of the Little East Conference post-season tournament will be starting up soon. Watch for Sunny Jakubas to continue to be one of the top freshman in the conference.
4.Felix Lindeberg, Men’s Soccer (Unranked last issue): In the past two matches that the sophomore goalkeeper has been in net for the Panthers, he has posted shutouts. Against the University of Southern Maine, Lindeberg stopped both shots he faced in a 0-0 tie, while he stopped six shots in a 1-0 Panthers victory. Lindeberg will need to come up big in his next game, as Rhode Island College currently has a 6-4-1 record. Lindeberg had six saves in a 0-0 tie last season.
5.Jana Nieman, Volleyball (Unranked last issue): Last weekend, Nieman had 18 kills between three different matches to direct the Panthers to a 2-1 record. Nieman leads the team in kills this season (24 more than anyone else), and looks to continue the success that the Panthers have had over the past few weeks.
Teams
1.Tennis (9-0 record, last issue 1st): As stated in the last issue of The Clock, when will this team slow down?! By starting the season off undefeated, this team is in great shape heading into the last few matches of the regular season. A huge match against Rhode Island College this upcoming weekend might just determine the top team in the conference, as both teams come into the match with identical 9-0 records. The tennis team comes back and then plays Bridgewater State on Monday (10/13) afternoon, who is currently 3-0 in conference play.
2.Field Hockey (7-2, last issue 2nd): Facing a 3-0 deficit allowed for this team to develop some character, as they came back to defeat the University of Southern Maine in overtime. A 5-1 LEC record is one to be extremely proud of, and the Panthers will look to roll over Fitchburg State this weekend.
3.Volleyball (7-11, last issue 5th): The past few matches have been tough for this team, as they have fallen in their past three games, 3-0, to Coast Guard, Bridgewater, and Keene State. Despite the three losses, the Panthers had won their previous four matches, including against in-conference rival UMass Dartmouth. This team will travel down to New Jersey over Columbus Day Weekend for the Kean Tournament.
4.Men’s Soccer (3-6-1, last issue 3rd): A 2-1-1 record over their past four matches have allowed this team to start building some momentum over the last third of their regular season. Against Western Connecticut on Saturday (10/5) afternoon, PSU was able to capture a crucial 1-0 win behind a Refaat Bashir goal.
Women’s Soccer (3-7, last issue Unranked): A tough 1-0 loss for the Panthers was one that they wish they could have back against Colby-Sawyer. Fortunately, this was a non-conference game, and won’t hurt PSU in the LEC standings at all. A big game against Rhode Island College is one that Plymouth needs in order to get back on track within their conference.
