Student Organizations face off in PACE’s Student Smack Down

Tues., Feb. 12, Plymouth State University’s activities committee PACE kicked off the winter carnival with a few exciting events beginning with air brushed banners, free hot chocolate and special 2013 Winter Carnival mugs in the HUB Fire Place Lounge.

Later that night in the Fire Place Lounge, PACE hosted the Student Smack Down, a friendly competition between PSU’s student organizations. Competing in the smack down were members from PSU Pride, the Women’s Rugby team, MAPS, and the Japanese Culture and Animation Club (JCAC). The first game in this three-part event was the toilet paper mummy. The objective of this game was to completely mummify one standing member of each group with two rolls of toilet paper. Watching the student organizations desperately running around in circles in attempt to finish their mummy first was an interesting sight that definitely attracted a few judgmental looks from those who were passing by. The end got a little crazy when MAPS and the Women’s Ruby team were neck and neck, but it was the Women’s Ruby team that took the first win.

The second game was tug of war. The student organizations faced off in a few intense rounds of the classic game that took place in front of the Information desk and the Sidewalk Café. The four teams really got into the competitive spirit and began shouting instructions during rounds and cheering each other on from the sides. Freshman Kyle Fiske, also known as “Sweetness,” made JCAC look like the favorite for the tug of war by dominating their first round but MAPS came back from the mummy game with a vengeance, destroying all competition to win the tug of war. When asked how he felt about losing to MAPS after being asked to join the JCAC team last minute, Fiske simply grinned and said “I kinda just got roped into it”.

The third and final game of the student smack down competition was the frozen t-shirt race. Unrolling and putting on a t-shirt seems simple enough, but not when it’s frozen stiff. The game started off slow while the participants were thawing their shirts with their bare hands. Once again, the Women’s Rugby team and MAPS went head to head for the title. It was yet again a close call but in the end, it was MAPS that emerged as the victors for the game as well as the whole smack down.

The whole event was short, sweet and to the point. “It was great to see the different clubs working together and competing in a student activity,” said Senior Max Corbet, member of the PSU Pride team. So make sure to keep your eyes peeled for the rest of PACE’s events and enjoy the rest of the 2013 Winter Carnival.
