Nirvana Inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Love and Grohl End 20 Year Feud
It was an iconic night on Thurs., Apr. 10, when just four days after the twentieth anniversary of Kurt Cobain's tragic death, Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, NY.
In addition to their acceptance, frequent collaborator and second guitarist Pat Smear, Lorde, Joan Jett, Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, and Annie Clark of St. Vincent joined the surviving Nirvana members, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic on stage for performances of classic Nirvana fan-favorites, including "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Aneurysm", "Lithium", and "All Apologies". Jett sang on "Smells Like Teen Spirit", Gordon on "Aneurysm", Clark on "Lithium", and Lorde closed the night with a powerful performance of "All Apologies".
The band was inducted by R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe. "This is about community. Nirvana tapped into a voice that was yearning to be heard. Keep in mind the times; this was the late 1980's. The idea of America-that hopeful idea-had been dismantled," Stipe said of Nirvana's success and significance to mainstream rock music at a time where feelings of angst and rebellion weren't as prevalent in music as they are now.
Cobain would have been honored Stipe was chosen to induct the band, as he was a very strong admirer of the R.E.M frontman. Stipe also spoke highly of Cobain, calling him an, "outsider voice for [gays], the fat, the fed-up, and the bullied."
Wendy O'Conner, Cobain's mother, and Courtney Love, Cobain's widow were also in attendance at the event. "He would have been so proud," O'Conner said. "He'd say he wasn't, but he would be."
Aside from being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Nirvana fans will finally be able to rejoice as Courtney Love and Dave Grohl finally put an end to their twenty-year feud with each other. The two hugged each other upon being inducted. Love tweeted a picture of the monumental moment, saying, "The most magical moment of the evening. Thank you Dave, love you. I know this made him smile up there."
Nirvana was formed in 1987 by frontman Kurt Cobain in Aberdeen, Washington. The band achieved worldwide success with the release of their second album, Nevermind, released in 1991. Since its release, Nevermind became an epochal album, establishing grunge as a musical genre and was responsible for propelling alternative rock, as a whole into the mainstream.
