This past weekend, Plymouth State University celebrated Earth Jam, an outdoor celebration of Earth Month. The event took place on Alumni Green in front of the Hartman Union building. The event started at noon and was scheduled to end at 11pm. The small town festival kicked off with the beginning of an all day musical presence that hosted thirteen diverse bands, some being from the Plymouth area. Along with the locals, bands traveled from Boston and New Jersey to partake in the gathering of those that aimed to spread the word of a sustainable lifestyle. To emphasize the importance and availability of alternate means of energy, the venue was powered by solar-powered panels located next to the stage.
Along with the attendance of music lovers and sustainability advocates, the community was invited to participate with fun activities such as tie-dying and hula hooping. Vendors took advantage of the celebration to promote small self-made businesses which were in line with the Earth Day theme. Homemade jewelry, information on environmental education, and art pieces of different mediums were among the many commodities available. Homegrown plants and vegetables were also on sale, along with different types of honey from the surrounding area.
As the sun began to set, the scene became a bit more accommodating for the music lovers. With the sun beyond the horizon, the bands were able to utilize the outside of the Hartman Union Building to display a fascinating light show. The Alchemystics, headliner of the musical portion of Earth Jam, went on at 9:30pm and played a great set ending at 11pm.
No reported incidents occurred over the weekend, which is a big victory for the student body at Plymouth. With Spring Fling just around the corner, this was a great start to the end of the year.
