Welcome newcomers and returners back to PSU. While the weather certainly doesn’t indicate it, the fall sports season has already begun. After the first few games, it’s time for an exhilarating first round of power rankings. As always we start with each fall team:
1. Field Hockey: The team with the distinction of playing in the home away from home (New Hampton School) is showing off a winning record at 3-1, Led by Junior Nicole Burgess of Mexico, ME with four goals. The women have had strong showings and are looking to hit their stride soon.
2. Women’s Soccer: The women’s soccer team has started off the season 2-1 getting two shutouts against non-conference opponents Salem State and Daniel Webster, as well as losing a close one to Bridgewater St. They are led by Sophomore Louisa Noble of Benton, NH with three goals in the early going.
3. Volleyball: The PSU Volleyball team is currently sporting a 7-3 record, taking three out of four in the SUNY Canton Invitational and then another three of four in the Granite State Challenge. Like the other teams these have all been non-conference games; they are led in points by Junior Dani Tabor (Olympia, WA)
4. Men’s Cross Country: The men’s cross country team finished 4th of 17 teams at the New England invitational led by freshman Sam Brunette of Newport, VT setting a new school record.
5. Men’s Soccer: Sporting a record of 2-3 the men’s soccer team has both won and lost close contests, after taking a 3-2 victory at Salem State the men fell to New England College by a score of 3-1 as well as keeping defending NCAA champ Tufts University honest, losing a 1-0 contest. Look for them to turn the wick up as the season progresses.
6. Women’s Cross Country: Also, competing at the New England Invitational the women’s team finished a respectable 7th out of 17 teams in attendance.
7. Football: Having only played two games so far, the Panthers lost a tough home opener to Castleton 21-10, before hitting the road and taking a close contest at Mount Ida 9-6. While the team has showed sparks of great play, there is unfortunately not enough consistency to be able to succeed on a consistent basis. If the Panthers can string that together they have the talent to do well.
