The Panther tennis team improved to 3-1 overall in the conference after a big win at UMass Dartmouth this past Saturday, winning two of the three doubles matches and beating the Corsairs 5-4 overall. At No.1 doubles, senior Zara Jakubas (Califon, NJ) and freshman Irene Ireme (Concord, NH) came back after trailing 0-5 to win 8-6. Freshman Kelly Corson (Exeter, NH) and senior Peyton Smith (Stuttgart, Germany) won out the tiebreaker, giving UMass Dartmouth their first loss at No.3 doubles this year and giving Plymouth the big LEC victory.
2014 LEC Player of the Year Zara Jakubas defeated UMD’s Jenna Lahaie 6-1, 6-1 in the singles competitions. Sister Sunny Jakubas (Califon, NJ) and teammate Peyton Smith also won their singles matches, respectively (S. Jakubas def. Kerry Magoon 6-0, 6-1; Smith def. Sam Rollings 6-1, 6-2).
The lady Panthers hosted Salem State this past Wednesday, with box scores unavailable for press time.
The Men’s Cross Country jumped 11 spots from last year’s UMD invitational, coming in 18th out of 41 schools last Saturday. Freshman Sam Brunnette (Newport, VT) and Warren Bartlett (Louden, NH) continued their impressive first year in collegiate athletics, finishing 39th and 43rd out of 324 runners in total. Bartlett finished just six seconds behind teammate Brunnette, running five miles in 26:38. The next four runners for Plymouth State were also freshman; Cameron Pavao (Methuen,Mass), Kyle Saunders (Hudson, NH), Casey Real (Georgetown, Mass), and Cameron Atherton (Rowley, Mass) all posted career best times, finishing 106th, 194th, 207th, and 213th.
The Women’s Cross Country team finished 29th out of 40 teams, jumping up four spots from last year’s placing at 33rd. Freshman Lora Giguere (Tolland, VT) placed 144th, finishing the five kilometer race in 21 minutes, seven seconds and fellow freshman Haley Dennis (Coventry, R.I.) finished 15 spots behind her with a 21:29 time. Sophomore Rileigh Goulette (St. Albans, VT) finished 209th overall, with teammates Sarah Uhlman (Ashland, Mass) and Courtney Allen (Lewiston, Mass) placed 219th and 226th, respectively.
The Cross Country teams travel to Keene State for an invitational on October 3rd.
