The reigning MASCAC champion Plymouth State Panthers looked to start the new season out on a strong note in their opening matchup, and picked up the home opener with three key goals in the third period in front of a Halloween decorated crowd this past Saturday.
The scoring opened at 11:53 of the first period when freshmen forward Cody Lanceleve (Stewiacke, N.S.) finished a quick transition play for his first collegiate marker. The assist on the play went to Josh Woody (Sunderland, MD) and Tord Thoresen (Oppegard, Norway). The remainder of the first period was marked by strong Panther possession, despite the team’s inability to get past Hawk goaltender Tyler Stepke. Becker got on the board with one second left in the first period when a broken play was ended with the puck in the back of the net. The score line remained the same in the second despite the fact that the Panthers out-shot Becker 20 to 10.
The draw was finally broken at 3:03 in the third period on a power play marker from junior forward Dan Dupell (Collegeville, Pa.). The assist on the play was given to Riley Flanagan (Weymouth, Mass). Becker matched the Panthers power play effort with a goal of their own at 8:08 in the period by Brandon Morgan (Rochester, N.Y). At this point in a back and forth matchup, the Panthers dug deep and scored three goals in quick succession. Lead by Ian McGilvrey’s (Omaha, Neb.), the Panthers took over the game in dominant fashion. A goal at 16:09 in the game by Josh Woody gave the Panthers four players with multiple points in the high scoring seven-goal game.
The Panthers look to build off of this strong offensive display as they take on Stonehill College this Saturday in their next home game. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 PM.
