The Plymouth State University women’s basketball team fell to UMass Dartmouth in LEC action at Foley Gymnasium on Saturday, January 30th, with the final score being 69-52.
The game started out with UMass Dartmouth’s senior Colleen Kane (Arlington, Mass.) hitting back to back threes in the first two and a half minutes, and this was a theme that continued throughout the game. Kane had a game-high 19 points for the Corsairs. Senior Beth Castantini (Newburyport, Mass.) added 13 points and a team-high 6 rebounds to the Corsairs’ efforts.
As for PSU, the team’s top performers included junior Kayla Wyland (Melrose, Mass.) who scored eight points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, junior Ace Lawrence (Middletown, Conn.) who was their top scorer, putting up nine points, and senior Taylor Perry (Simsbury, Conn.) adding eight points of her own.
UMass Dartmouth controlled the lead until the opening seconds of the third quarter when Perry tied the game with a three-pointer. The Corsairs responded with five straight points including a three by Castantini and a layup by Kane. Then PSU sunk another triple, this time Lawrence, and the Panthers were only down two. However, they would never get close again, as a layup from UMD junior Megan Ronaghan (North Attleboro, Mass.) ignited a 17-5 run from the Corsairs that ended the third quarter with a score of 52-36.
In the final frame, Plymouth State’s Lindsy Poulin (Goffstown, NH) put together a 5-0 run of her own, including a two-point shot and an and-one layup to bring the lead down to 14, but that’s as close as they would get in the fourth quarter. PSU did not do enough to play their way back into the game, as they saw their 16-point third quarter deficit turn to 17 points, and that’s how the game would end, with a final score of 69-52. PSU falls to 6-13 overall and 0-9 in the LEC, while UMass Dartmouth improves to 13-6 and 4-5 in LEC action.
