The Plymouth State University women’s lacrosse team took two out of three games last week during a spring break series in Bayoman, Puerto Rico. The Panthers played Lasell college (Newton, Massachusetts), Coby-Sawyer College (New London, NH) and Franklin & Marshall college (Lancaster, PA) during the break bringing their season record to 3-2.

“The trip to Puerto Rico was a great chance for the team to finally be outside and play 3 games. Like other PSU teams, we have been inside for all of our pre-season.” said Interim Head coach Abby Burbank. “Two of our games were played in the Loubriel Stadium. In addition, we were able to play out of region opponents Lasell and Franklin & Marshall.”

The first game against Lasell, Sophomore Sam Sullivan (Canton, MA.) scored six goals en route to a 14-6 win. Sophomore Megan Tingley (Natick, MA.) and junior Caroline Vonachen (Framingham, MA.) also had a big game for PSU. Tingley tallied three goals and an assist as well as five draw controls and two caused turnovers while Vonachen had two goals, an assist, and two caused turnovers.

Game two featured another great performance by the trio of Tingley.

Sullivan and Vonachen as each of them scored three goals apiece and lifted the Panthers to an 11-7 victory against Colby-Sawyer. Plymouth scored most of their goals in the first half of the game, leading 11-3 before Colby-Sawyer cut the lead back down to four.

Game three, however, did not go in the Panthers favor as undefeated and #2 ranked Franklin & Marshall University rocked Plymouth State in a 20-6 loss in the final game of the spring break series. Once again, Vonachen was the top performer in the last game registering two goals while Tingley, Sullivan and two others each scored one goal.

Despite going 2-1 in Puerto Rico, Coach Burbank had high praise for her sophomore starter, Sam Sullivan, who scored 10 goals and one assist during the three game stretch. “Sammy is showing great leadership on the attacking end of the field. She, like so many of the players, is working hard to improve her skills and add versitility to their playing and that shows.”

The Panthers next two games are on the road at Castleton University (Castleton, VT.) and Norwich Univer- sity (Northfield, VT.) before returning home to face UMass Dartmouth (Dartmouth, MA.) on April 2nd.
