After a week in Puerto Rico, and two games on the road, the Plymouth State University women’s lacrosse team started April off on a high note, defeating LEC opponent UMass-Dartmouth at home 17-10.
The win also marked the first collegiate win for freshman goaltender Emilee Wargo (Madison, CT.) Wargo was one of three goaltenders to see playing time, making 13 saves and allowing five goals in just 35 minutes.
Offense had played a big part once again, as 10 different players found the back of the net. Former LEC Player of the week sophomore Megan Tingley (Natick, MA.), and juniors Caroline Vonachen (Framingham, MA.) and Kaitlyn Wilder (Framing- ham, MA) netted two goals apiece, while Sam Sullivan (Canton, MA.) added to her scoring streak, posting five goals and one assist. Sullivan added to her season total to 25 points in last Saturday’s victory.
Trailing 2-1 early in the first half, the Panthers offense got into their groove. Sullivan and Vonachen combined for four goals, storming back on top to take an 8-2 lead with just over 10 minutes left in the first. Sullivan would add two more goals in the closing five minutes of the half, as PSU would cruise to a 13-5 halftime lead.
Scoring from Kaitlyn Wilder (Framingham, MA.), Merissa Miano (North Reading, MA.), Caity O'Leary (Gloucester, MA), and a free position shot from Sarah Thompson (Hooksett, NH.) was the only offense in the second, as UMD out-scored the lady Panthers 5-4. Quality time possession was the benefactor, as PSU held on for the win.
The Panthers will travel to Rhode Island College tomorrow, as the game scheduled for Wednesday against Bridgewater State was postponed due to sloppy conditions.
