The 68th Primetime Emmy Awards aired Sep. 18. PSU’s film club sat down and talked about T.V.’s biggest night.
“The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” and “Game of Thrones” dominated the night. “The People v. O.J. Simpson” won five awards, and “Game of Thrones” won three including Best Drama Series, which it won for the second year in a row. “Game of Thrones” has now won more Emmy Awards than any other show, surpassing the previous record holder, “Fraiser”.
“Game of Thrones could have won everything, and it didn’t win every single thing. That made me sad,” said junior Max Goddard, a member of film club.
Jimmy Kimmel was host for the night. “I don’t really care for Jimmy Kimmel, so I wasn’t stoked,” said Jordan Rosenburg, a senior communication and media studies major.
For sophomore Monica Hamel, one of the highlights was when the kids from “Stranger Things” passed out peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to the audience. “That was pretty amazing. That was A-plus to my roommates,” said Hamel.
On a more serious note, Hamel highlighted Jeffrey Tambor’s speech. Tambor won Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of the transgender character Mort in the show “Transparent”.
“When he won his award, his whole speech was about giving transgender actors and actresses a shot in Hollywood,” said Hamel.
“I would not be unhappy were I the last cisgender male to play a female transgender on television,” said Jeffrey Tambor during his acceptance speech.
Another notable moment was when Aziz Ansari’s speech was cut off. He won Best Writing for a Comedy Series, along with Alan Yang, for “Master of None”, but after Yang finished speaking, Ansari was cut off. “I was so upset. I was like, really?” said Rosenburg.
The night was praised for the diversity in the nominees. “I was really happy that people who won were very diverse people,’ said Rosenburg.
