Jammin’ at Karl’s has been going on for three years now, down at the Karl Drerup Art Gallery in the Draper and Maynard building. A different band, typically from PSU, is chosen one to three times per semester to play at the gallery for everyone to enjoy.
“It’s meant to bring people in to enjoy the music and to have the artwork around them,” said gallery director Cynthia Robinson, who helps put all this together. “It’s a kind of relaxing and fun experience for new groups, and people to come into the gallery and learn about it as a place.”
This past Wednesday night, the band “Squatch”, who classify themselves as a psychedelic rock band, put on an amazing performance.
The members, Corey Hale (guit fiddle), Jacob Kallander (4-strings), Jamie Sherburne (hit sticks), Justin Gehly (other guit fiddle) and Julia Fernandez-Turk (singer), are all very open, bubbly and joyful people.
When asked about their inspiration for their music, they all shared a laugh and jokingly said, “Recovering from a wisdom teeth operation,” which actually did help them write a song, giving them creativity.
The group listens to a lot of metal, blues and jazz. Another thing they focus on for inspiration to writing a song is a “Color or tone rather than an actual meaning. Whatever fits the color of the song.”
Students on campus should come watch “Squatch” perform because they are something new and unique. They improvise a lot. Every show is different, and that’s what makes them stand out.
The idea behind their name is related to the fact that they produce organic sounds and use analog effects.
Catch them at open mics. Soon, they should also be playing at the Lucky Dog downtown as well as at Biederman’s Deli.
To find out where they’ll be playing next, check out their Facebook page https:// facebook.com/TheSquatch-Band.
PSU students can let the gallery know who they’d like to play next. Suggestions are always welcome.
