The Colonials of Western Connecticut defeated the Plymouth women’s soccer team Saturday, October 15 at Arold field. After a close game, the Colonials proved to be victorious with a 2-0 final launching them ahead in LEC standings, with playoffs inching forward.
36:10 into the first half, after seven saves from Plymouth Senior goaltender Annaliese Schmidt (Newmarket, N.H) the Colonials scored their first goal on a deflection by Junior mid-fielder Andrea Devoe.
Starting the second half down by one, the Panthers tried to rally back, starting with a shot from Senior defender Leah Swanson (Atkinson, N.H) that went high. Junior forward Naomi Kramer (Bow, N.H) added into the mix, firing her her second of the night, but Colonial goaltender Jillian Fernandez was too much a match for the Plymouth offense.
A second goal from Andrea Devoe assisted by junior forward Autumn Sorice (would seal the victory for the Colonials in the 80th minute of the game. Goaltender Annaliese Schmidt made 17 saves on the afternoon. The Panthers are now (2-3-0) in LEC standings and host Rhode Island College, Saturday, October 22, 1:00 p.m.
During the break, both teams came together to support an important cause that started with the Plymouth State field hockey team in the 2015-16 season. To heighten the news of childhood awareness in America the field hockey team adopted honorary member Arielle Beaulieu, a three and a half year old childhood cancer survivor through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation.
Plymouth and Western Connecticut women’s soccer are two more sports teams that have joined the march to spread news about the important cause. Both teams now wear yellow armbands to promote cancer awareness. Bracelets have been given out to other sports teams from schools such as Umass Dartmouth, Keene, Worcester State, as well as various high schools.
