Women's Soccer Rallies against UMass Dartmouth in LEC First Round

The women’s soccer team came from a recent 2-0 loss Saturday October 29th at Cressy field against UMass Dartmouth, where the Corsairs outshot the Panthers 22-7 and scored two unanswered goals.

During the last regular season game before the first round of Little East Conference playoffs, the Corsairs came out ready to play. 10:07 into the first half UMD Senior Nicole Starkey-Cox netted a goal off a free kick from Senior defender Erica Hammond that would go unanswered into the second half.

With almost a minute left into the second half the Corsairs solidified their win over the Panthers with another goal from Sophomore Courtney Hewitt (North Attleboro, M.A) assisted by Junior Abby Silva (Falls River, M.A). This would end the game until the next time the two teams would meet in the first round of playoffs on Tuesday November 1st, again on UMASS’s home field giving them the advantage.

First Round LEC:

After a long game with two over-times this past Tuesday night at Cressy field in Dartmouth Mass, the women’s soccer team will advance to the second round of the LEC playoffs. This will be the first time since 2001 that the Panther’s will make it this far in playoffs.

After the first two halves with no score the teams went into a double overtime that ended with 16 saves for the Panthers and seven for the Corsairs. The game progressed from there into a best of six shootout.

During the first round Senior Leah Swanson (Atkinson, N.H) took the lead by scoring the first point for the Panthers. This was followed up by a UMD goal by Junior defender Liz Sterns. During the second round Plymouth took the lead again with a back-of-the-netter by Junior Kat Holmes. The second round of the shootout for UMASS was a missed opportunity from Senior Midfielder Talia D’Amburoso.

Heading into the third and fourth round of the shootout with the Panthers up by one, Freshman Amy Luther and Junior Sophie Brisere both came up empty. The Corsairs took this opportunity and scored with both shots, finding their way across the goal line from Sophomore Courtney Hewitt and Freshman forward Baily Dowling.

With the Corsairs leading by one, Senior Hannah Kallis (Sanford, M.E) made it a 3-3 tie. UMD Senior Erica Hammond came up scoreless after her attempt at victory. That led to Panthers Junior Defender Adrianna Kippenberger’s (Willmington, M.A) chance to sink one into the net for a 4-3 lead. With UMD’s last hope in Sophomore Kayla Loycano, on the line, she was unable to net an equalizer, and Kippenberger’s goal sealed the win that the Panthers needed.

The Panthers played at Eastern Connecticut this past Thursday in the :LEC semifinals, with score unavailable for press time.
