V-Day Plymouth: “The Vagina Monologues”
On Feb. 24 and 25, the global activist movement V-Day will present a benefit reading of “The Vagina Monologues” at the Plymouth Congregational Church.
“The Vagina Monologues” is a play by Eve Ensler, and winner of the Obie Award. It is based off of interviews with over 200 women. The monologues are not just a work of art, but also tell a story, moving people to rise up and move towards action.
V-Day performances around the world allow volunteers and students to produce benefit performances that raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their communities. Proceeds this weekend’s reading will go to Voices Against Violence, Plymouth’s local crisis service agency for victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual harassment, and stalking.
The reading is part of the V-Day campaign One Billion Rising. It is based on the statistic that one out of three women will be raped or beaten in their lifetime, which adds up to over one billion women and girls worldwide. The campaign urges people to create radical artistic initiatives that help create a world of equality, dignity and freedom for all women and girls.
Audiences will be moved by these emotional, funny, and poignant stories. Come and join, give it a listen, and raise awareness.
