The Plymouth Playlist

We’re back! For the Plymouth Playlist’s stunning return, we took a look at song choices for the month of February. We cover everything from the Super Bowl, to Valentine’s Day, to our never-ending anticipation for Game of Thrones to return.

As always, our main intention is to offer a variety of song choices that you might not typically find on your own. If you have any song choices for our next edition of the Playlist in March, please send the song title, artist’s name, and a short justification for why you chose it (about 70-100 words is ideal) to mtm1027@plymouth.edu for consideration.

Imagination- Maroon 5

With Maroon 5 headlining the Super Bowl Half-Time Show, I thought it would be nice to include a lesser known cover from the group. Imagination is their take on the classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory song. It is a haunting and rhythmic piece that often gets overlooked because of its strange nature. I personally like how the typically wonderous tune is warped to a slightly more off balanced one with Adam Levine’s voice to bring the journey full circle.

Strange Religion- Mark Lanegan

This is a newer song to me recommended by a friend. It’s a slow song with a chilling delivery from Mark Lanegan’s vocal performance. It has a folk/blues style fusion that is completely unique. The main reason I wanted to include it in this playlist is because it is something that I would normally not listen to, but genuinely think people will enjoy for its subtlety and charm. Why include? Is romance.

Andante, Andante- Lily James

With Valentine’s Day coming up soon, a romantic subtext is in the air, it seems appropriate to pull a song from Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again as a way to ring in this theme for the month. The song builds more and more to an excitement about a newly forming relationship as hopes of it flourishing in the future remain its consistent chorus.

Take It Back- Logic

In observation of Black History Month, it’s important to reflect on American history and its relationship with race. “Take It Back” by Logic provides a social commentary on modern day struggles that continue from long ago. With tensions always escalating politically, observing historical changes and similarities over time is an essential practice.

The Rhythm of Night – Vinyl Theatre

I bet you didn’t know that February marks the Lunar New Year, otherwise known as the Chinese New Year. I didn’t. We’re entering into the year of the Pig which hasn’t been around since 2007. This song talks about night. The moon comes out at night. Anyway. Now I know we here at Plymouth love any reason at all to “celebrate”. So, you’re welcome. Go celebrate. I’ll honor the new lunar year by farming Lunar loot boxes in Overwatch.

Bury A Friend – Billie Eilish

I was just about to start scraping the bottom of the barrel for things to write about since someone else who works on this playlist stole all the easy ideas. But not two hours before writing this, Billie Eilish announced her new record, WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? and included three pre-release songs along with it. The record comes out on March 29th. This song is one of them (the one I think is the best of the three). Go and give them a listen and see if you agree.

Livin’ on a Prayer – Bon Jovi

I’m a fan of arbitrary ways to count down to things. Now, since the final season of Game of Thrones comes back in April, the 4th month of the year, and February is the 2nd month of the year, being in February puts us halfway to Game of Thrones in the year 2019. Yes, I know, it’s already been well over a year since the last season, so why start re-counting percentages now? Because I can, that’s why.
