Men’s and Women’s Skiing Gliding Through UNH
On January 19th, the men’s and women’s ski teams traveled to Franconia, New Hampshire to compete in the University of New Hampshire Carnival. Held on Cannon Mountain, the men’s team would go the end the day 6th out of 13. The women’s team didn’t have as much luck, going 13 for 13.
Karl Kuus (Toronto Ontario) had a big day, getting his first top ten finish of the season and help his team immensely. On Kuus’ first run, he grabbed a 53.52 second finish that put him comfy in 8th. Sophomore Cooper Yates (Richmond BC) hovered just above the top ten with his finish of 54.12. The second run brought Kuus up his two spots, shaving his time down .4 seconds from the first. Yates wasn’t able to compete is this run and finished with his 11th place. A group of three, Ander Gonzalez (Pamplona Spain), Michael Townsend (Layton UT) and Logan Martin (Edwards CO), took places 30-32 respectively. Only .32 seconds separate them, and .09 separating Gonzalez and Townsend.
The men’s team combined for 71 points and UNH took the carnival all together with 129 points.
Sophomore Gigi Quimby (Dunstable MA) would be the only female Panther to finish both runs during this competition. Her first run (1:02:67) put her at 51st place and even though she was over a second slower in her second run, she’d finish capping off the top 40. Rachel Smith (Stowe VT) had an opening run of 1:04.99 to put her only at 58th but wouldn’t go on to finish her next run. Junior Rachel Kosik (Goodrich MI) had a similar situation, not being able to finish her second run, but was at 64th fastest during her first.
The Panther ski team opened their 2019 season over the holiday break and have competed in another carnival. The St. Lawrence Carnival took place over January 11-12 and the men’s team had a best finish in 7th out of 13. The women would be right behind with a best finish in 8th.
After a two week break, the teams will travel to Vermont to the Stowe Mountain Resort to compete in the University of Vermont Carnival.
