PSU Sports Wrap-Up
Players who have earned their conference's awards over the past few weeks:
Freshman Masha Lange (Danville, N.H.) was named Little East Conference Rookie of the Week for her performance against Keene State, Middlebury, and Rhode Island College. Between the six games, in which five were wins for the Panthers, Lange went 13-for-23 at the plate, which drove in four RBIs, led to 11 runs scored, and five extra-base hits. Aside from the second game of the double-header against Keene, Lange hit an absurd .650. With Lange being named Rookie of the week multiple times this Spring, it would be an upset if she wasn't named Rookie of the Year in the LEC this season for softball.
Aside from being one of, if not the best basketball players on campus, freshman Curtis Arsenault (Berlin, N.H.) was named Rookie of the Week in the Little East Conference for his efforts against Keene State College, as well as UMass Boston. Between the 10.2 innings that the right-hander tossed, Arsenault struck out nine, while giving up only one run for a 0.84 Earned Run Average between the two games. Upon being named Rookie of the Week, Arsenault pitched five innings of scoreless baseball to lead the Panthers to a 7-2 win in a win-or-go-home game against Western Connecticut State University. The eight strikeouts in this game was a season-high for Arsenault.
Senior captain Lorin Field (Hollis, N.H.) was named Little East Conference Defender of the Week for her performances against Rhode Island College and the University of Southern Maine. Against USM, Field posted a 75% save percentage, stopping 15 of the 20 shots. Three days later, not only did Field stop four of the five shots she faced in net, but she also had the opportunity to play attack for much of the last 40 minutes of the game, which resulted in three goals and an assist.
Against both USM and RIC, Junior Shannon Connerty (Nashua, N.H.) tallied 12 points en route to being named LEC Offensive Player of the Week. Against the Anchorwomen of RIC, Connerty had a season-high five goals that helped lead the Panthers to a 19-4 win, while four goals and two assists allowed the Panthers to capture a 17-6 win against USM. A follow-up performance against Western Connecticut State University on May 2 saw Connerty have seven assists, a career-high for her.
Not to be outdone by her teammates, freshman Caroline Vonachen (Framingham, MA) was named Little East Conference Defender of the Week for accumulating six draw controls, eight ground balls, and for forcing six turnovers against Rhode Island College and the University of Southern Maine. On the offensive side of the field for the Panthers, Vonachen was also able to find the back of the net five times to help PSU to 17-6 and 19-4 victories.
