Real Sports Talk with E$
Are you like me, in that there are just some words that you can just never spell correctly? A word like neseccary (that’s how I always spell it, I kid you not, thank goodness for autocorrect). I ALWAYS spell wrong, I can literally count on my hand how many times I have spelled that word correctly. No one is perfect, and I never really have any intention of doing so, because you should learn from your mistakes, and grow as an individual. With that said, time to segway into sports (because, it is necessary to talk about sports here).
Picking NFL games correctly shouldn’t be a science, but apparently it is. I participate in a small pool where you pick games against the spread (for those of you who don’t know what that means, essentially one team is already “winning” before the game even starts), and the most I have gotten this year is 10, which really isn’t bad. What I am attempting to get to with this, is that the NFL is unpredictable. As I am sure you know, the New England Patriots were destroyed by the Kansas City Chiefs, but the Pats then came out and destroyed the previously undefeated Cincinnati Bengals. The fans of the Patriots were down and then up like that of the topography of New Hampshire. They aren’t the only inconsistent team this season, as the Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants, Chicago Bears, and Detroit Lions have had some ugly losses, and yet, some great wins through five weeks of the season. Don’t expect to find much out about any of these teams quite yet, as there are still 12 weeks left in the regular season. Bottom line? Expect the unexpected, and whenever in doubt, take a home underdog against the spread.
The NHL season has started up as of when this article will be put into the paper, and people around Plymouth are obviously excited for that. Hockey, in my opinion, is the sport on campus that people go the most bananas over, as when the Boston Bruins win any particular game, you can walk outside to hearing at least one person yelling that they won. I am personally a hell of a lot more pumped for the season to start for both hockey teams on campus, but there are still a few more weeks before that happens. The usual suspects are in contention to capture the Stanley Cup this season, including the Los Angeles Kings (who won the cup last season), Pittsburgh Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks, and the Boston Bruins. I will always admit that I am not a hockey expert, but my guess for a Stanley Cup champion/final is that the Colorado Avalanche will defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games, with Matt Duchene winning MVP.
In other Irrelevant (though I find interesting) sports news:
-Glad to see that my Angels/Dodgers World Series prediction is working out well……
-Shout-out to senior captain Shannon Connerty on the Women’s lacrosse team for being named MVP in the team’s green/white game. I believe she had three goals and two assists.
-Russell Wilson should NOT be in the talk for NFL MVP. A) it is too early for ESPN to talk MVP’s B) he has a fantastic offensive line in front of him
-Nice to hear that some of the kids on the football team basically forced Matt Ormsbee (who is more or less my boss on the paper) out of the weight room. Nice to see that we have some classy people here.
-That obviously doesn’t pertain to all of the players, as I know there are some good kids on that team.
-Are Mississippi State and Ole Miss for real in college football? This week will, or won’t show if they are.
-Florida State is overrated and has a cupcake of a schedule. Playing teams like Wake Forest, Syracuse, or The Citadel aren’t exactly tough games. Let’s see how the FSU/Notre Dame game is in a few days.
-Just sayin’ Eric Brill for PSU Super Fan 2015
-It is annoying how much of an affect fantasy football, and fantasy sports for that matter, have such an affect on people’s rooting interest.
Non-Sports Information of the Week
Rant of the Week- Blows my mind how the students on campus are of even less quality now then they were when I first got here. Admissions office, who the hell are you letting into Plymouth State University now-a-days? If, and that’s a big if, I decide to donate any money to this school, I sure as hell will make sure it doesn’t go to anything pertaining to admissions. Instead, I think it will go to some of the awesome coaches around here.
-People that still call “shotgun” for the front seat of a car should go and kick rocks. We aren’t in elementary school.
-Won’t mention names, though it is obvious who I am talking about, but don’t you dare come into a meeting preaching that I/we need to market ourselves to other so that enrollment could potentially increase; that is SO disrespectful. It isn’t our job to do that, and trust me when I say I have no problem telling you this in person.
-Sort of disappointed that more people haven’t come up and said anything about the power rankings I created this year.
-I have a feeling I am going to get the Ragged Mountain/Pats Peak mountain pass for the winter. Waterville is overrated, I can go to Cannon for $5 (assuming it wins the vote), and Cranmore is a long way away to not be worth it. I’d get the Loon pass, but I have no intention to drive over to Maine.
-Nice to have some help with other people helping me by writing some sports. Big thanks to Justin and Hannah this week.
-On that note, I gave up a chance to go down to Philadelphia for a number of reason. I coulda gone down on the school’s/newspapers dime, but decided not to. Eight total kids are going down, some I know, most I don’t, and I know they will have some fun down there.
-These kids will never learn how to skateboard on this campus. It is 11:47 P.M., and I can still hear them falling all over the place outside.
-Shout-out to my good friends that graduated last year (or even before that) that still read this column; it means a LOT to me. Like this on the ol Facebook, an I’ll give you a shout-out next issue.
-Coming for your job John Clarke!!
-Shout-out to Ashley Kilstein (who is the Women’s Hockey Coach for those of you that don’t know) for being a boss. She was with a recruit a week and a half ago, giving her a tour, and was talking The Clock up. You are a badass.
-The rings that the PSU Women’s Lacrosse team got are badass.
-Mike Economos, you are the man.
-Hope that Pom is still kicking some ass in the dining hall. You are still the best Pom.
-Inter-Lakes all day. Duh.
-Went driving through Maine last week, and there are some absolutely beautiful little towns out there. Do yourself a favor while it is still warm around here; drive around the area and just go on an adventure.
Real Talk with Eric- Enjoy this long weekend, whatever it may be that you are doing. Mid-terms/test week aren’t too far away, and you can’t screw around with that stuff.
‘Til two weeks from now, I’m outta here……
