Countdown to Graduation
Graduation, a word students either dread or love. If one looks it up in the dictionary, it would probably say bittersweet underneath it. Seniors are getting ready to graduate in a month and time sure is flying.
Jacob Peard, a senior here at Plymouth is a Business Administration major with a Professional Communications minor. He’s a great example of how graduation sneaks up on most. “The thought of actually graduating hasn’t officially set in yet. I’m definitely not ready to leave this school and all the wonderful people that make Plymouth such an enjoyable place. I’m sure once final exams are over and the graduation date approaches, a lot of emotions will start to set in. Although I love this place and don’t wanna ever leave, I’m ready for the next step in my life,” said Peard.
Trying to figure out what to do after college is hard for many students. Not only is it stressful but also it’s a lot of hard work. “As of right now it’s kind of up in the air. I intend to live in Plymouth over the summer and work a seasonal job while I try to find a reliable job within my field in my off time. Hopefully by the end of the summer I will have found a job starting my career in the business world,” said Peard.
Alex Herbst, a senior Meteorology major is also graduating this spring. His feelings are on both sides of the spectrum but he’s trying to make the best out of it. “I definitely have mixed feelings about graduating and being able to pursue a job that I am passionate about, but I also know I will miss Plymouth. PSU has become my home over the past four years, and it is always difficult leaving home. I have been able to make such a difference on our campus and I really don’t want that to end. But I know when it’s time to go, there’s always another great opportunity waiting,” said Herbst.
The town of Plymouth has always been considered a cozy and safe place, so thinking about the real world can be intimidating. “The real world is certainly going to be different in ways from what I have dealt with here at PSU. But in some ways, it will likely be the same. I’m excited to see what life has in store for me, and what a positive difference I can make,” said Herbst.
Andy Stephens, a senior Communications major with a Sales minor had a rough start in high school but made his mark here at PSU. “I honestly had concerns about graduating when I first came to PSU. I had a 2.1 GPA in high school and was never really the best student. I think that fear drove me to really be motivated and fast forward four years later and I’m about the graduate. The things I’ve learned here and the people I have met is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever experienced. I feel ready for graduation. I want to start making a lot of money and start living for myself. Without the unconditional love and support from my family this would never be possible. I am so grateful for that,” said Stephens. He’s had many job offers including one in Tempe, Arizona which would be one of his top choices.
Most freshmen don’t know what to expect during their four years here at PSU, but a little advice can go a long way. Peard said, “The only advice I have is to have fun! Go out and enjoy everything that this university has to offer. You won’t regret it. Trust me you can go out and have fun and still go to class, get good grades and most importantly get a good education. Have fun and good luck.”
