NOVA Magazine: PSU's Newest Student Organization

NOVA magazine is the first official student-run online magazine at Plymouth State University. While the organization is still in its beginning stages, NOVA hopes to showcase PSU’s talent, including anything from news and studio art, to comics, reviews, and creative pieces.

The online magazine will consist of several different headings: News, Arts & Entertainment, Humor, Advice, Science & Tech, Shouts, DailyU, and Contests. The organization hopes to include both global and local news in a way that is engaging to all PSU students. The “shouts” section will include creative writing pieces and student anecdotes, while the advice column, read as “Dear Pemi,” will aim to promote positivity and encouragement. Student clubs and organizations will be given the opportunity to write press releases to inform others about their upcoming events or recent projects.

NOVA also hopes to launch a “Classroom Partnership Project” campus-wide. With this initiative, NOVA will highlight a variety of student work. Whether that includes a research paper written by a Biology student, a write-up about new app a Computer Science major created, or an art student’s photography project, NOVA plans to recognize as many students as they can.

The organization is lead by Emmett Warren, a Junior English major from Palmer, Massachusetts. Warren’s ultimate goal is to use this online media platform as a way to connect PSU with the larger community. “I want to give everyone a platform and a voice,” said Warren. “I’m working to give Plymouth State the recognition it deserves.”  Warren has recruited 20 members from a variety of academic departments in hopes of reaching a wider audience. He plans to post an online edition of the magazine weekly, but update the news column daily. He mentioned that students will be able to submit their work anytime and even subscribe to NOVA’s weekly email newsletter.

Dr. Robin DeRosa, Assistant Chair of the English Department and Chair of the Interdisciplinary Studies Department, will serve as NOVA’s advisor. DeRosa is beyond excited for the potential of this new student organization. “I think NOVA has the chance to be not just a very different PSU student magazine, but also something else that we haven't quite had before: a student-produced online hub, where members of campus can submit work and ideas to be shared across departments and programs,” said DeRosa.

NOVA can soon be found online at: www.plymouthnova.com. The organization will also be at Earth Jam on Saturday, April 25. Their photographers will be taking “face in hole” pictures, while their illustration team will be drawing caricatures. All of the proceeds will go towards NOVA’s start-up fund.
NOVA will be “live” on Friday, April 17.
