Movie Trailer Madness
It's only April, but for fans of upcoming blockbuster films it's more like Christmas. In just a short amount of time, we've been treated to an insane amount of teasers and trailers for some of the biggest upcoming movies coming to the last half of 2015. Let's take a look at the ones that worked, and some that may have killed any excitement for the film before it even hits theaters.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Let's just start with the biggest release on this list. It still feels like a bizarre pipe dream that a new Star Wars movie is coming, let alone that it looks like it will be any good. However, as thousands of weeping grown men can tell you, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is very real and looks very awesome. This is the perfect kind of teaser: none of the footage we've seen so far gives too much away, but still gives us nerds plenty to speculate and discuss (what's up with that crashed Star Destroyer? Or that shot of Darth Vader's husk of a helmet?). And, of course, it's hard to not overdose on goosebumps when Harisson Ford says to Chewbacca, and by extension, the audience, “we're home”.
Ant-Man
Ant-Man already feels like the black sheep of the Marvel Studios films, and it isn't even out yet. Behind the scenes shake-ups like former director/screenwriter Edgar Wright leaving due to creative differences with the studio have left many in the know hesitant about the quality of the finished product. The teaser trailer released back in January didn't do much to ease worried fans, however this second trailer hopefully has done the trick. It's still hilariously absurd seeing a comedic actor like Paul Rudd as the hero in a comic-book movie, but the few shots we get of the shrinking effects look incredible, even if it would be nice if the movie took it's source material more seriously.
Jurassic World
“On the fence” is probably the best way to judge the general consensus for this movie. Jurassic Park 4 had been long-rumored for so long that it seemed like it was going to slip into mythic Ghostbusters 3 territory, however relatively new director Colin Trevorrow and America's sweetheart Chris Pratt will hopefully inject new DNA into this fossilized franchise. With that said, the vibe as discerned from the latest trailer feels less like a Jurassic Park movie and more like a really good imitation of one. Nothing a good Jeff Goldblum cameo can't fix.
Terminator Genisys
Nope. That's the best way to describe the twist revealed in the latest trailer for the latest Terminator sequel that nobody asked for. Avoid watching it if you are still interested in this tired shell of a franchise, because it reveals what can only be assumed is the films major third act reveal. Terminator movies have a weird tradition of spoiling their best plot points in trailers, and this preview continues the disappointing trend.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
The most recent trailer on this list, opens the furthest from now, and is the shortest, however Batman v Superman is the only upcoming movie that rivals Star Wars in terms of anticipation. As divisive as Man of Steel was, it still set the stage for DC's movie universe yet to come, and is an interesting set-up for the conflict between the man of tomorrow and the dark knight. Speaking of the dark knight, despite the hate he received from some Ben Affleck looks to be the most comic-accurate interpretation of Batman yet. It's no small feat to look physically imposing against Superman, and he deserves all the praise he will likely get in the role.
