Tim Keefe Retiring
Timothy Keefe first joined Plymouth State University in 1977 and now, after nearly four decades, the Dean of Students is turning over the keys to his office.
Starting as a Residence Director in Blair Hall, Dean Keefe has been an integral part of many different areas on campus. After Blair, the young Dean Keefe was the first Assistant Director of Student Activities at Plymouth State. Shortly after this, he became the Director of Student Activities where he stayed for several years. Some time later, Dean Keefe moved back into residential life as the Associate Dean of Students and Director of Residential Life, eventually morphing into his current role as the Dean of Students. Throughout this time, in his many different positions, Dean Keefe has been able to work hand-in-hand with students improving the University as a whole, and inevitably impacting students individually.
One such student, Junior Alex Herbst, has worked with Dean Keefe many times during his time at Plymouth. "He has been a great role model and positive influence on the Plymouth State campus for such a long time. He is that one bright and smiling face I can count on no matter what is going on in-and-around campus. I am proud to say that I've gotten to know him over the years, and can call him a friend. We'll certainly miss him here on campus, but we know he's never going to fully leave us," said Herbst.
In fact, Keefe will still be on campus, but now in a teaching position rather than an administrative role. "My wife and I are both going to teach starting next year. Right now, I am teaching a First Year Seminar class, but I hope to eventually also teach Individual and the Law," said Keefe.
Along with some teaching on the side, Dean Keefe also plans to further his musical talents. At Plymouth, he is currently the advisor for the Plymouth Pep Band and plays the Saxophone at every home hockey game. "I plan on expanding my musical abilities. I do some entertaining around and would like to further develop my skills," said Keefe.
Sophomore Connor Brown has also had many conversations with the Dean and spoke to the Dean's ability to be a relatable person, as well as always giving sound advice. "Through the numerous interactions I've had with the Dean, not one have I left disappointed. He is relatable and always steers me in the right direction. I am sad to see him leave his position, but it is nice knowing he will still be around in some form," said Brown.
Sophomore Brandon Pierre had similar words for the Dean. "Plymouth State University will certainly not be the same without Tim Keefe. Tim's departure from PSU saddens me to hear, but I find comfort in that I have had the privilege to know and work with Tim over the past two years. Tim's slegacy will continue on through the lives he's touched. Tim will be sorely missed," said Pierre.
Dean Keefe also had several messages for all students from incoming freshman to the senior in their final semester that he hoped many students would take the time to listen to. "College is a lot like a buffet, you can stick to the things that you're comfortable with, but you'll always be wondering what the other stuff tastes like. So go out there and try new things, take risks, and don't be afraid to raise your hand. Great things happen to those who try."
