PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State College got back to the .500 mark in men’s lacrosse Tuesday, posting a 19-3 Little East Conference victory over the University of Southern Maine in the home opener at Panther Field.
PSC, which picked up a 13-11 non-conference victory at Norwich on Monday, is now 4-4 overall and 2-1 in LEC games. The Huskies drop to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
The Panthers took a 5-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, and extended it to 9-0 midway through the second frame before USM got on the board. PSC held a 10-1 advantage at halftime and a 15-2 lead after three quarters before coasting home with the win.
Senior Andrew Quesnel (Middlebury, Vt.) led the Panthers offensively, scoring four goals and assisting on three others. Sophomore Sam Harding (South Berwick, Maine) also accounted for four goals, while junior Jason Biedrzycki (Amherst, N.H.) added threegoals and three assists and classmate Ken McGuire (Wayland, Mass.) contributed three goals and one assist.
Others getting into the scoring act for PSC included freshman John Gallagher (Forestdale, Mass.) with two goals and senior Eric Gilbert (South Portland, Maine), sophomore Jake Frerk (Beverly, Mass.) and freshman Pat O’Malley (South Windsor, Conn.) with one goal apiece.
Freshman Kurt Gagnon (Hollis, Maine), senior Matt Griffin (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) and sophomore Nick Rich (Yarmouth, Maine) scored goals for the Huskies.
PSC starting goalie Dan Egan (Cambridge, Mass.) made seven saves before giving way for the last 12 minutes to sophomore Tim McNamara (West Lebanon, N.H.), who made two stops. USM freshman goalie Frank Leclair (York, Maine) was credited with three saves.
The Panthers are back in action Saturday with an LEC contest at pre-season favorite Eastern Connecticut (2 p.m.). Southern Maine returns home to host Salem State in a conference match-up on Saturday (2:30 p.m.).
