Women’s Lacross Captures Little East Title

The Plymouth State Women’s Lacrosse Team finished their regular season ranked first in the Little East Conference and took the LEC’s inaugural championship, defeating UMass-Dartmouth and Eastern Connecticut State at Arold Field on Friday and Saturday, respectively. After receiving a by in the first round of tournament play, the Panthers keel-hauled the fourth seeded Corsairs 21-5. Sophomore Katie Sheridan had a career high eight goals and four assists, seven of those goals coming in the first half of the game. “We dominated the LEC! When our game was on, no one could stop us,” exclaimed Sheridan. “I think that goes for the ECAC’s, too.” The Panthers spread out the scoring opportunities with sophomore Michelle Norton and senior co-captain Brooke Smith scoring three goals apiece. Seniors Karen Hosmer, Robin Hartman, and freshman Annemarie Guglielmo each had two goals, while Junior Janet Conner also popped one in.PSC Freshman goalie Melissa Gravilla stopped four shots the first half and sophomore Carmen Villnueva made another two in the second half.On Saturday, PSC had to play second seeded Eastern Conn. Knowing that Eastern plays dirty, the Panthers were ready for a battle. The scoring was back and forth the whole game and at the end of the first half, Plymouth found themselves 4-3. In the second half Plymouth seemed to get their momentum back, but whenever they would score, Eastern would answer right back. With Plymouth trying to hold onto their lead, Eastern’s Sharon Kilpatrick put one passed Plymouth’s Melissa Gravilla with just 1:09 left on the clock, putting the game into overtime.In the first regulation overtime, Robin Hartman received an assist from Katie Sheridan and got the first goal just 12 seconds into the game. Sheridan added another two within the next minute.PSC dominated the two three minutes halves and came out the first ever LEC Champions. The Eastern goalie, Erika Blozie had an outstanding performance blocking 18 shots, but it was the scarlett-tressed sophomore speed-demon, Katie Sheri-dan, who was voted Tournament MVP.”I think as a whole team, our skills improved, and we increased our depth,” demurred Sheri-dan. “The play doesn’t decrease when our subs go in.” Plymouth hosts the ECAC Tournament finals at Arold Field on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Second year Head coach Wynne Lobel was ecstatic with the team’s ECAC selection.”We are hosting the first ECAC in years,” explained Lobel. “This is the most competitive tournament to be in for us.”
