Field Hockey Blanks Westfield State, 3-0

WESTFIELD, Mass. Plymouth State College registered its fifth shutout victory in six games this season, blanking Westfield State College 3-0 Tuesday afternoon in a Little East Conference field hockey game.

PSC junior goalies Ellen Ward (Thorndike, Maine) and Kerry Brady (Jefferson, N.H.) combined on the shutout, with Ward making one save and Brady stopping three shots.  The Panthers have allowed only one goal in six outings this fall.

Plymouth State got all three goals in the first half before holding on for the win.  Senior Katie Dodge (Sanbornton, N.H.) put PSC on the board with 18:55 remaining, with sophomore Caitlin Moran (Rowley, Mass.) picking up an assist.  Senior Jill Matteson (Chatham, Mass.) made it 2-0 four minutes later, converting a goal from freshman Lilly Silva (Lowell, Mass.), and sophomore Amanda Gutowski (Conway, N.H.) rounded out the scoring with 1:21 on the first-half clock, with Matteson registering an assist.

The Panthers finished with a 20-8 advantage in shots on goal.  The loss drops Westfield State to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

PSC, 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the LEC, returns home to host arch-rival Keene State this Saturday in a conference match-up at Arold Field (2:00 p.m.).  PSC is the two-time defending LEC champion, and Keene State won the title in 1998 and 1999.
