PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The latest round of weekly athletic honors came out Monday, with five Plymouth State College student-athletes receiving recognition for their performances last week.
The Little East Conference selected two PSC athletes – senior Jamie Hazard (Foster, R.I.) as Women’s Tennis Player of the Week and junior Amber Greenlaw (Gilford, N.H.) as Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week. The Freedom Football Conference also named junior EricCalderwood (Merrimac, Mass.) Special Teams Player of the Week, and placed senior Jay Zinis (Manchester, N.H.) and sophomore Matt Trombley (Londonderry, N.H.) on the Weekly Honor Roll.
Hazard received the LEC’s top weekly honor in women’s tennis for the second straight week after posting her second consecutive unbeaten performance. She went 2-0 at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, improving her record in both flights to 4-0 on the season. Hazard overcame an illness last Saturday to help PSC defeat UMass Dartmouth and improve to 4-0 on the season, 2-0 in LEC matches.
A 5’4″ defensive specialist, Greenlaw recorded 65 digs in four matches last week for an impressive average of 4.33 per game. She made a team-high 23 digs in an LEC victory over Keene State and added 18 digs in a tough LEC loss to Western Connecticut, which stopped PSC’s 11-match winning streak. Greenlaw has been a solid contributor to the Panthers, who are now 11-1 overall.
The starting kicker on the Panther football team, Calderwood set a PSC and FFC record last Saturday with a 51-yard field goal on the last play of the first half. His boot broke the record of 50 yards set by former Panther kicker Jesse Elderkin, who made his kick at Brockport State in 1999. Calderwood was successful on two extra points and two field goal tries Saturday, the other field goal coming from 29 yards out earlier in the second quarter
A 6’0″, 185-pound wide receiver, Zinis caught five passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Trombley, a 5’10”, 180-pound sophomore, shared the team lead with seven tackles while making one interception and knocking down two other passes. Calderwood, Zinis and Trombley provided the highlights in what was a disappointing 30-20 non-conference loss at William Paterson University.
