Women’s Basketball Sinks Coast Guard’s Battleship, 81-50, with All-Time Scoring Record

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State senior guard Jenn Pelletier scored 19 points Tuesday night, including the 1,000th of her career, as Plymouth State College defeated U.S. Coast Guard Academy 81-50 in a non-conference women’s basketball game at Foley Gymnasium. Pelletier hit 6-of-13 field goal attempts, including 5-of-9 from beyond the three-point arc, while adding six rebounds and three assists. She drained a three-pointer with 3:24 remaining to reach the 1,000-point milestone, the eighth Panther woman in history to reach the milestone. Pelletier set the Plymouth State assist mark last season and now has exactly 1,000 points with much of the season left to play.

The outcome was also a milestone victory for Plymouth State head coach Lauren Lavigne, as the fifth-year Panther coach registered her 100th career win. Including a two-year stint as head coach at Endicott College, Lavigne has a career coaching mark of 100-66. The win improved Plymouth State to 5-1 overall, while Coast Guard dropped to 1-3.

Pelletier was one of four Panthers to score in double figures. Senior Courtney Albert contributed with 17 points and nine rebounds, senior Whitney Morin added 14 points, 10 boards and six assists, and senior Heather Adey chipped in for 10 points and nine rebounds.

Plymouth State shot 47 percent from the field while limiting the Bears to a 32 percent shooting mark. The Panthers also had a 51-29 advantage on the boards. Plymouth State jumped to an 11-point lead (20-9) just 10 minutes into the game, and held a 13-point lead (36-23) at the break. A big factor in the outcome was the full court press put on by the panthers, disrupting the Bears offense. The Panthers went on a 20-4 run to start the second half to put the game away. Coast Guard was led by senior guard Tessa Mueller, who had 19 points, and sophomore forward Lis Bosma, who added 13 points in the loss.

Sophomore Betsy Oswalt tossed in a career-high 24 points Saturday, December 7 leading Plymouth State women’s basketball team to an 82-52 blowout victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. This match-up was the Little East conference opener for both teams.

Oswalt connected on 8-of-11 field goal attempts and also converted on 7-of-8 free throws, while also contributing two rebounds, two assists and a steal in 25 minutes of action.

Plymouth State was never challenged in the game, jumping to a 47-20 halftime lead and coasting home with the win. Plymouth State shot 47 percent from the field while holding UMass Dartmouth to a 29 percent shooting.

Oswalt was one of four Panthers to score in double figures. Senior Courtney Albert, who became Plymouth State’s all-time scoring leader Thursday night at Salem State, tallied 12 points against UMD. Senior guard Jenn Pelletier added 10 points and seven rebounds, and classmate Whitney Morin contributed 10 points, six assists and four steals.

None of the Corsairs reached double figures in scoring, as Bridget Bowes led the team with nine points. UMass Dartmouth drops to 1-4 this season.

Senior forward Courtney Albert broke the Plymouth State College women’s basketball career scoring record Thursday evening, and the Panthers overcame a 15-point halftime deficit to pull out a 74-72 non-conference victory over Salem State College.

The Panthers trailed 32-47 at the break, but relied on the solid playing of Albert and classmates Whitney Morin and Heather Adey. Albert finished with a team-high 21 points, while Morin added 17 and Adey chipped in with 12.

Albert also put herself in the Panther records books as the all-time scoring leader, upping her career total to 1,273 points. She broke the record held by former Panther Betsy Bruce, who scored 1,264 points from 1991-95. Albert broke Bruce’s single-season scoring mark last year with 466 points.

Plymouth State’s next match is at home as they host Little East conference opponent Eastern Connecticut this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
