Winterim Sports Recap; Streaks, Injuries, and Season’s Best

While most of the student body returned home for the annual winter break between semesters, Plymouth State College athletics kicked back into action just after the first of January.

Women’s basketball had a successful winter break, finishing up with a 6-3 record overall and 4-1 in the Little East Conference. The Panthers’ played extremely well over break, and as it came to an end, they were in the midst of a six-game winning streak. During the week on January 13, senior Courtney Albert was named LEC Weekly Honor Roll for her performances during the Bowdin College and Western Connecticut State University games. While playing against St. Joseph’s College, senior Heather Adey scored a season-high 21 points, which helped her earn a spot on the LEC Honor Roll for the week of January 20. After the Panthers defeated Southern Maine on January 25, head coach Lauren Lavingne became the winningest coach in women’s basketball history with a record of 84-41. Albert continued to dominate during the break, and was rewarded for her efforts and was names LEC Player of the Week for January 27.

Men’s basketball also performed well over break, ending with a 5-3 record overall and 3-2 in the Little East Conference.

Freshman center Kevin Boutilier was selected LEC Men’s Rookie of the Week during the week of January 13 while sophomore Anthony Oglesby was named LEC Men’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week for the week of the January 20. To finish up a well-played winterim break, the Panthers edged out Keene State in a nail-biting three-point victory.

Ice Hockey had an interesting winterim break, with several blows but yet a few crowning moments. Starting goaltender Mike Mansson severely injured his right hand when a skate cut into it during the UMass Dartmouth game. He is expected to be out for the remainder of the season. On January 11, the Panthers had a huge win over Franklin Pierce with a 7-1 victory. During the week of January 13, sophomore Kyle Poirier was selected to the ECAC Northeast Weekly Honor Roll. Poirier received the honor for being one of the ECAC’s top offensive players during the previous three Panther games. During the week of January 20, Junior Matt Toutain and two freshmen, Paul Feeney and Chris Hyson, were all named to the ECAC Northeast Weekly Honor Roll.† The three have been instrumental in helping PSC win three straight games to get the team back to the .500 mark.

Women’s swimming had a successful break, ending with two wins and one loss. The first meet was a disappointment, with the opposing team capturing 12 of the 16 events. However, Scarlette Scarborough won the 100 yard backstroke and the 200 individual medley, and Krit Kearins swept the diving, winning both the one and three-meter board events. Bridgewater State was a much closer meet than one would have liked, with the winner of the event coming down the last event. But, it was Plymouth that would emerge victorious in the 400 freestyle relay and therefore take the win. It would be the junior class that would lead the Panthers’ to their victory. Multiple wins from Scarborough, Annebelle Winters, and Becky Huntington would be the keys to the win. Huntington was also named LEC Diver of the Week for the week of January 22.

Wrestling also performed well during break. At the annual PSC Invitational Wrestling Tournament, senior Shaun Cleary led the Panthers, capturing the title in the 141-pound weight class and earning the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler honor.†Junior Rich Moskowitz also did well, capturing the championship at 157 pounds, defeating Ryan Holder of UNH in the title bout, 13-9. The Panthers’ also split four matches and finished tenth at the New England Dual Meet Wrestling Championships. Towards the end of break, the New England College Conference Wrestling Association ranked four of the Panther wrestlers in the top four in their weight class. Senior Shaun Cleary was ranked second at 141 pounds, junior Nate Kitteredge was ranked second at 184 pounds, junior Rich Moskowitz was ranked third at 157 pounds, and sophomore Dan Moskowitz was ranked fourth at 149 pounds.

Men and women’s skiing also performed well over break. At their first meet of the season at the UMass Winter Carnival at Berkshire East Mountain on Jaunary 18-19, the men took third out of ten schools while the women took sixth out of eleven schools in the alpine skiing. As the race continued on Sunday, the men placed fourth out of ten and the women placed sixth out of eleven in the giant slalom. The Panthers also performed very well at the Plymouth State College Winter Carnival, which was held on January 25, where the women took first and the men placed fourth. All in all, the winter break season was a well-played experience for all the teams.
