The pile of mail in the Financial Aid office has shrunk. The mountain of papers that even Sisyphus would have dreaded has been sorted, and filed. The staff in the Financial Aid office has accomplished this daunting task under the leadership of the new Director, June Schlabach. Fortunately, she has had help in her new position. Mrs. Schlabach took over the post from Bob Tuveson, who had been the Director for about 25 years. All of his experience at Plymouth State will still be available, as he will continue for perhaps one year on a part-time consulting basis. Mrs. Slabach accepted her new role just two months ago, amid the changeover to the new Banner system. She acknowledged that acquaintance and proficiency with the new system will take some time, however, she also pointed out the benefits for students once that has occurred. The new Banner system is important, but only because of its usefulness in reaching the greater aims of the office: “Our goal is to serve the students…The only reason we exist is to provide assistance in identifying resources.”The whole process will then become “faster and more simple” for the students, and their parents. The single financial aid forms being filled out today are sent to the school, the state, and the federal government. While it may seem like a bother to students and their parents, June Slabach remembers when each one of those entities required a separate form. Although she has only officially been with Plymouth State University for just over two months, Mrs. Slabach is no stranger to dealing with various systems. She has been in the field for over thirty years at Hoffstra University, in New York, and Ashland University, Ohio State University and Capital University; all in OhioWhen June Slabach is talking about goals, her audience listens, because she speaks with the authority and self-assurance of someone who has reached many of the goals she has set for herself. On a personal note, she is a runner who has finished over twenty marathons. This feat has implications in here career as she accepts this new challenge head on.One of her first purchases upon arrival here in Plymouth was a pair of snowshoes. If she is already preparing for a New Hampshire winter outside, then she will be ready for any challenge inside the Financial Aid office.
