Communications Honor Society

On March 8, twelve Plymouth State University students were inducted into Pi Omega, the first Lambda Pi Eta national communication studies honor society chapter at PSU. Lambda Pi Eta, founded in 1885 at Arkansas University, is the official honor society of the National Communication Association as well as an accredited member of the Association of College Honor Societies. Lambda Pi Eta consists of nearly 420 active chapters at colleges and universities throughout the world offering numerous opportunities to members. Professor Kylo-Patrick Hart of the communication studies department is co-advising the Chapter with Dr. Metasebia Woldemarium. Hart recently told Plymouth Week, “We chose Lambda Pi Eta because the national organization represents all different aspects of communication study-everything from interpersonal communications to media.” Plymouth State University Pi Omega members will attend the Eastern Communication Studies Convention in April 22-25 as well as hosting a seminar in October of this year titled, “Screen, Media, and Sexual Politics.” Hart expects that the honor society will build a sense of community among communication majors while the fundraising and community service that are required offer a chance for members to get involved and excited about the program. Lambda Pi Eta represents the first letters of what Aristotle described in his book Rhetoric as the three modes of persuasion: Logos meaning logic, Pathos relating to emotion, and Ethos defined as character credibility and ethics. The basic goals of Lambda Pi Eta are as follows: 1) Recognize, foster and reward outstanding scholastic achievement in communication studies; 2) Stimulate interest in the field of communication; 3) Promote and encourage professional development among communication majors; 4) Provide an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas in the field of communication; 5) Establish and maintain closer relationships between faculty and students; and 6) Explore options for graduate education in communication studies. New PSU student members of the Pi Omega chapter of Lambda Pi Eta include: seniors Sabrina Blanco, Ryan Boissonneault, Ben Bradley, President Katie Judd, Andrea Krupsky, Rachel Laflamme, Secretary Jason Lheureux, Jeff Moore, Treasurer Christine Tremblay and juniors Scholarship Officer Stacey Cheeney, Vice President Daniel DeSantis, Brad Feller, and Ashley Hokanson.Further information such as the Lambda Pi Eta constitution can be found at www.natcom.org/StudentsOrgs.
