Poetry Competition at Biederman’s

On April 27, at 7 p.m. at Biederman’s Deli on Main St., Poets and Writers will 5th annual Son of Slam poetry and spoken word competition. The Son of Slam is a fun and entertaining event that features some of the most talented and recognized writers and performers at the university. These masterminds at manipulating the English language provide compelling, inspiring and amusing work, and each performer has fashioned a style that is all their own. The guidelines for the competition are simple: Each performer pays one dollar to enter the showcase, and the first eight people to sign up are chosen to participate. The students perform their original spoken word and/or poetic material individually and the audience votes to determine the winner. The grand prize is the coveted Silver Ham and since this event stresses performance and not competition, everyone else will come in second place and also receive an attractive gift. Remember, audience participation determines who will come out on top, so bring some friends down to support your favorite performer. Past winners of the Biederman’s poetry slams include Jason McKenzie, Nicky Ross, Jon Link and Dan Singer, and the featured poets and writers for this year’s showcase are: Robby Binette, Alyssa DiGiulio, Paris Landry, Crystal Lavoie, Cara Losier, Rob Masse, Jason McKenzie and Tyler Musty. There will be a regular but abbreviated Open Mic prior to the show and the actual Son of Slam competition will be kicking off at around 7:30pm. Get there early so you can reserve a seat close to the action and enjoy this entertaining and memorable event!
