The movie was a smash hit, but the soundtrack to Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind alone speaks volumes of a touching and profound story. Jon Brion, the composer, has done amazing work before, such as in soundtracks like Punch Drunk Love and Magnolia, and Michel Gondry, Eternal Sunshine’s director, seems to favor his music.Jon Brion’s instrumental works on the soundtrack, such as “Peer Pressure,” “Bookstore,” and “Phone Call,” have elegantly beautiful orchestrations and Brion has a talent for making every sound in every song make sense. These songs are painstakingly created for touching the human emotion – a simplicity in portraying an emotional theme that a lot of popular music has lost over time.”Strings That Tie To You” has been floating around the file-sharing scene for a couple of years now, and Brion followers would attest to this song being one of his best. It’s comparable to the song “Here We Go” from Punch Drunk Love because they have good chances for the pop charts, but have slightly missed their marks in the music world. Brion’s buzzing voice warms the song over soft guitars and percussion as he talks about small things that remind him of a loved one – something most can all relate to.Other songs on this soundtrack that are impossible not to give credit to are “Row,” “Drive In,” “Theme,” “Spotless Mind,” and “Main Title” – which sounds like a clip for Edward Scissorhands and begs the question of when Brion and Tim Burton while team together for a movie.Brion is not the only artist on the soundtrack. In fact, there are plenty of great songs rom The Willowz, Beck, Don nelson, The Polyphonic Spree, and Electric Light Orchestra. The Electric Light Orchestra’s “Mr. Blue Sky” has enough said for it in the word ‘awesome.’ The Polyphonic Spree lives up to their name as a spree of ambient bliss in “Light & Day” and “It’s the Sun,” but the utter happiness gets to the point of annoyance. The only odd placement on the soundtrack is Lata Mangeshkar’s “Wada Na Tod,” which, although delightful, doesn’t fit in with the rest of the songs from the CD.Needless to say, Brion has done it again. A wonderful soundtrack with the help of a few other talented musicians backing up a historic story of love. This soundtrack is just a small, delicious taste of what Gondry’s amazing movie is like.
