The election of 2004 will go down in history as one of the most bitterly contested, heated, and negative Presidential elections in the history of the United States. There are two definitive choices in this election and those who say John Kerry and George Bush have very similar plans haven’t been paying attention. It’s time for a regime change in Washington, D.C. We are at a crucial period in our country’s history and it is time to elect a president who can lead effectively in a time of trouble, create jobs, promote environmental protection, and foster a sense of unity within the country. The man who can do that and get our country back on its feet is Senator John Kerry. Senator John Kerry has led in the Senate for nearly nineteen years, and in that time has worked to strengthen the economy, improve public schools and fight social injustice. John Kerry is a Vietnam veteran and knows what it is like to fight in a war. He will lead the United States in an effective War on Terror, not drag America’s feet through reckless foreign policy. Since September 11, this President has continually used Iraq and Osama Bin Laden/Al Qaeda in the same sentence in order to scare people into believing that Iraq was an immediate threat. The President has misled America in the War on Terror and there needs to be accountability on his part. He said there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and in the process has sent 200,000 troops and more than $200 billion overseas. After two years no WMD’s have been found. He has led an irresponsible and ineffective War on Terror, has created more terrorists, and has even made enemies of our allies. The President has shifted the focus from Afghanistan to Iraq, thereby shifting the focus off of Osama Bin Laden and those who DID attack us on September 11. John Kerry will bring allies to our side and lead a more effective War on Terror.George Bush has also created a half-billion dollar deficit, all of which our generation will have to pay off in the future. In the meantime, this President is pushing for permanent tax cuts for the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans. John Kerry supports tax cuts for the working, middle class and those who work hard and deserve the money they make.On the environment, George Bush has rolled back Clean Air and Water protections, has continually been on the side of logging and oil-drilling companies, reneged his promise of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and has promoted oil-drilling in the Alaskan Wildlife Refuge. John Kerry will promote and invest in environmentally friendly fuels which will last far longer than oil and also create thousands of new jobs. John Kerry voted against drilling in the Arctic and has long been an advocate for environmental protection. On top of everything else, Bush has been one of the most, if not the most divisive President in the history of this country. Due to his foreign policy and many domestic policies, he has created a deep division through America and the world. The constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage is an embarrassment. There has only been one amendment to the Constitution that has actually taken rights away from people. That was the Prohibition Amendment and that was eventually repealed. This President endorsed writing discrimination into the Constitution. John Kerry has a strong plan for America and throughout this campaign and the debates, he has shown his commitment to creating a stronger America. There is a need for change in Washington, D.C. John Kerry has the fortitude and vision to lead this nation for the next eight years and that is why it is important that everyone goes out and votes for John Kerry for President on November 2.
