Plymouth State’s Intramural Season Closes: Champions Declared

Plymouth, N.H. – Three intramural sports seasons came to a close this past week; Softball, Ultimate Frisbee and Flag Football all competed for the coveted T- Shirt and bragging rights that is synonymous with intramural sports. As most “folks” at liberal arts colleges know, intramural sports is life, the rest is just details. Teams eat, breath and sleep their once-a-week sport till the post season brackets or one-day tournament arrives. Then the lines are drawn and game faces snarl for the race towards the championship game. In an event that is as hyped as March Madness, the softball league was as competitive and intimidating as Russell Street during a PSC riot. Twelve teams in either league started off the season, which led to the post season where all the teams had an equal chance to participate. In the Co-Ed Softball league, the ResLifers defeated the Wastoids 11-10. The Wastoids took an early lead in the first inning bringing in four runs, but at the bottom of the second, the ResLifers came alive and scored eight runs that would ultimately decide the outcome. In the Men’s Softball league, the championship game was not as clear-cut, and a winner could not be determined till the ninth inning. Going into the top of the ninth, the score was 18-18 and the Hounds were looking to create some distance from the sluggers on the Steep Anglers. No room was allowed and the Anglers smacked a three run homerun to walk off with the championship. In the Flag Football championship, the Capitols defeated the Warriorz in the closest match of the intramural league, 35-34. The flag football season was relatively short, but the Capitols capitalized on the league and performed an undefeated season.Ultimate Frisbee wasn’t much of a guessing game as the Mojo Disco Inferno soared passed the competition in a stomping of the next closest competitor, the Grill Masters. The runners up were competitive to make the game intense and exciting, but it was clear where the mojo was that evening. The score was 13-4 in favor of the Inferno, and the game was played under the lights down at Draper Maynard Field. Intramural sports continues with such events as the three-on-three basketball and floor hockey league and playoffs, as well as racquetball one-week tourney, and the dodgeball one-day event all coming up in November
