Men’s Volleyball Club Sweeps Tournament

Worcester, Ma – On December 5, the Plymouth State Men’s Volleyball Club team swept the Worcester Poly-Technical tournament. It was the Panthers third pre-season tournament this semester that they have gone undefeated. The Panthers first match was against Brown University who put up a good fight in their first game a score of 25 to 22, us, but just couldn’t pull it together in the second game when the men beat them 25 to 12. Brown just seemed to lose steam in the second game.Team President Brendan Kelley said early on that, “There was a definite improvement from last tournament at Northeastern where we just couldn’t pull it together.” The team has been adjusting to their new setter as well Dustin Moya who came out to Plymouth all the way from Denver, Colorado. Dustin came here to play soccer, and now plays volleyball as well. Robert Angelone, week side hitter, commented that Dustin has “excellent hands”. The Plymouth Men then tried their luck against Clark University and prevailed with two resounding wins of 25 to 14 and 25 to 15. It was during this match that Joseph Boudreau also went for his first game this season with a middle hit and score in the second game. The Panthers were going strong and didn’t let down in their next match games either against Williams College. They had a shaky start, but with some good communication and key placement of the ball on William’s court in serves and spikes, they managed a 25 to 21 win in the first game and a 25 to 16 win in a their second game. The last match of the day was the toughest challenge for the Panthers. They went up against WPI the hosting team. The teams battled out two serious games. Many devoted Panthers d fans pushed their team through with cheers and encouragements. The final scores were Plymouth 28 to 26 and 25 to 23. For the first time since this present team was formed, they went undefeated for an entire tournament. Dan Barry, the teams Vice President, stated: “It feels pretty good. I don’t think I’ve ever done this before.” Another addition to the team this year is Marry Pillsbury, an excellent passer who could say simply that, “it was fun.” The men finished the day with confidence in themselves for their outstanding performance.
