PLYMOUTH- Recently, rumors have been swirling around that the Cardio Theater located in the HUB will be shut down, but Director of the HUB, Terri Potter, recently put rumors to rest.
During a recent allocations hearing, Assistant Director for Recreation Programs, Mark Wojcinski reportedly said that the HUB hotspot could be shut down. According to Potter, Wojcinski may have been misunderstood and the actual suggestion made by Wojcinski was “shutting [the Cardio Theater] down for an hour” in order for the fitness maintenance assistants to clean the machines. Potter stated this is what “he was really trying to get at that, but what people heard was ‘he wants to shut down the cardio theater.’
Wojcinski would like to shut down the Cardio Theater for a period of time everyday to keep up with maintenance necessary when salt and sand are issues. Salt and sand from student’s street shoes get into the belts and, according to Wojcinski, “can really ruin a machine.”
Currently there are twenty-one machines used by an estimated 150 students per day. Wojcinski stated that he wants to make sure that the students are being provided with consistently working machines. Clean shoes that have not been worn outside in the salt and sand are mandatory at the Cardio Theater. Students may actually be turned away if they do not bring a pair of clean shoes with them.
According to Wojcinski, keeping up with the theater is a difficult and ongoing task. The thing the maintenance staff need most to prevent any inconvenience or major changes in policy, is for students to comply with current rules by bringing clean shoes. This will eliminate a large portion of the complications with the machines for Wojcinski and the maintenance staff, as well as ensuring a safer, more consistent Cardio Theater for all students.
