PLYMOUTH – How secure is your laptop? Between last semester and this semester laptop theft is on the rise both on campus and off campus.
Information Technology Manager, Cathy Bates, wants students to be aware of laptop theft and gives you a few pointers on how to keep your computer safe.
First of all use your common sense, “Don’t leave your laptop unattended in an open accessible area,” suggests Bates. “And if possible, carry your laptop in an inconspicuous bag that doesn’t resemble a laptop bag.”
A cable lock should be used, equipping computers with a metal tag is also recommended, or use a monitoring software program. All of these options are available at the campus Computer Store on Merrill Street, across from Hyde.
“They’d have to wipe my hard drive,” Plymouth State University student Alex Martin comments. “I’m not afraid it’s going to be stolen-I take precautions to make sure it won’t be.”
Student, Josh Harrington expresses a little concern, but it sure that his computer is safe. “I’m kinda worried, but not really. I carry it on me at all times and have it on a cable.”
In order to protect the data on your computer be sure to back it up on a USB key, M-Drive, or on disk. Also check with your parents to see if their homeowner’s or renter’s insurance will cover your laptop or computer, should it be stolen.
