The Symposium: scholarly essays brought to you

One of the newest student publications, The Symposium’s purpose is to present a medium where students can publish their scholarly essays. Nate Bieniek, a junior philosophy major, had wanted to put together The Symposium since he was a freshman. Originally, he wished for it to be a purely philosophy-oriented publication but with the help of professors Scott Coykendall and Liz Ahl of the English department, the idea morphed into the collection of essays across the curriculum it is today. Nate’s reasoning for putting The Symposium together was fairly simple. “As a university, I felt that to meet the needs of students, such a publication seemed necessary.” Due to his hard work, and the efforts of Christine Messina, Nathaniel Lord, and Ivy Page, last semester the first publication of The Symposium made its debut. Nate hopes to publish a new edition of The Symposium every semester. He has even grander plans for the future. He wants to form an actual group called The Symposium, an organization to promote university-level liberal education and the “sharing of ideas and intellectual quality.” The group will be made up of members of the various honor societies and scholarly groups on campus. The Symposium is looking for both submissions and new members. Since it is an inter-departmental publication, all majors are welcome to submit their thesis-driven, quality, scholarly work by the deadline of Nov. 1st, or to join the actual staff of The Symposium. The staff is especially looking for a junior editor, but would welcome any others interested in just helping out. People who have submissions, or are interested in joining can contact The Symposium by sending an e-mail to thesymposium@plymouth.edu.
