Student Senate Meeting 11/13/05

New Senator ElectionsMark Perry was elected as a new junior class representative, congratulations Mark!

Projects at Plymouth StateLangdon Woods is currently under way and we are hoping that soon it will be a LEADS certified building. We are going to tap into some unused energy in our co generational facility at no additional cost. We have put in a state of the art waste water system so that the parking lots and roofs that collect water, sediment and pollution will go through a filtration system and into the ground already filtered. It will have energy efficient lighting as well as recycled materials that will go into its construction.

It will be opening next fall, the completion date is slated for the beginning of August. We are going to have three kinds of rooms; suites with single bedrooms and a shared bath. Double rooms with two people and a private bathroom and a couple of singles, some of them handicapped singles.

We will only gain 100 beds next year with the opening of Langdon Woods because Mary Lyon will be closed and a major renovation will be done. It was built in 1912 and it was last renovated in 1950, so there is a lot of work that needs to be done. It is going to have a brand new slate roof, new windows and heating system. The front porch and entry area will be replaced and two structures will be added on each end so that the fire escapes will be enclosed. We are going to enclose them into units that fit into the architecture of the building. The building will also be made handicapped accessible.

The last major piece is the basement. We are going to take all the utilities out of there and move the residential life offices there, the rest will be open for future use that is still undetermined. The interior floor plan will look very much like it does now.

The bathrooms will be different, they will be built in stalls so that when you go to take a shower there will be a private room. It will provide a great deal more privacy and comfort.

Next fall, Mary Lyon will be off line and Langdon Woods will be fully occupied. When Mary Lyon opens back up there will be 350 new beds on campus and 350 new parking spaces with the opening of Langdon Woods.

Blair is scheduled for a new roof and hot water system next summer. Info commons, the merging of IT and the library, is in the planning stages and the floor plan is being designed.

A snack bar will be added and there will be drinks and food allowed in the library. The IT help desk will also be located in the front of the library.

The last major project is the PE center. It was built in the 60’s and there are some problems with the air handling system and the pool. The space itself was built for about 1800 students. However, we did get a small amount of money to begin the planning for that building. We are going to be beginning that project in January. The next step is to design a plan for the facility in order to obtain funds and bring the project back to the legislature.

New Student OrganizationsSpring Fling passed through the Senate in its quest to become an independent organization. The Gaming Club updated their constitution to include a sub committee that focuses only on playing Magic and this updated constitution passed through the Senate as well.

ResolutionsThe SAME Resolution was defeated in the Senate on Sunday night (see SAME Resolution article for more information). However, two new resolution’s pertaining to non-discrimination on campus were introduced. These Resolutions are Military Recrutiment Equality Resolution and the Equal Employment Resolution. These will be voted on December 4, look for them on the Senate Board outside of the office for more information.
