News for the wired

? In Alpine, TX, a man was arrested after stealing a car and going to an odd location, reported the Associated Press and CNews on March 31. Police were reportedly chasing a man who had stolen a car. The officers caught up with the carjacker when he apparently made a wrong turn – into a Burger King drive-through. ? In recent months, the man who bought deceased Grateful Dead leader Jerry Garcia’s old mansion has decided to sell some of the items in the house for charity. One of these items was a salmon-colored toilet, which was sold to the Golden Palace on-line casino for $2,550. This is the fourth toilet that the Golden Casino owns which once belonged to Garcia. In an odd twist, CNews and the AP reported on April 1 that the toilet has been stolen, according to police there are no leads as to who would have stolen such a thing. ? The Golden Palace has also been in the news recently for buying another, and perhaps more disgraceful item. The Memphis AP reported on March 31 that the casino had recently purchased the tub James Earl Ray stood in to assassinate Martin Luther King Jr. The tub sold for $7,600. Perhaps even odder is the Golden Palace’s entire collection – which includes William Shatner’s kidney stones, and a grilled cheese sandwich which some believe bears the image of the Virgin Mary. ? A drug dog in Boston did not want to give up the goods, reports the Boston AP of March 30. According to the story, police were searching an apartment, when their pit-bull found a container that held 108 divided bags of marijuana. All 108 bags were recovered; however the dog reportedly put up a fight and ripped many of the bags. ? In Philadelphia, developers were planning on installing 116 waterless toilets in the 57-story Comcast Center, expected to open next year. According to a March 30 Philadelphia AP release, the hopes of saving an estimated 1.6 million gallons of water each year is going down the drain. Unions, which are strong in the city, have complained that with less water pipes, there will be less of a need for work, in turn harming the economy. A decision has yet to be reached. ? The battle for the bulge never ends, especially in a country where being overweight grows more common every year. According to a March 29 Las Vegas AP release, a Nevada ambulance company has chosen to help the overweight in the Las Vegas area. Roy Carroll, a spokesman for American Medical Response, commented that it is dangerous for all parties involved if a person does not safely fit in the back of an ambulance. He reports that in the past six months, there has been a great increase in the number of morbidly-obese people in need of emergency care. The company is now offering a larger ambulance designed for people who weigh 500 pounds or more.
