Students bring many things to college. Hopes, dreams, ideas, the occasional keg and nearly every disease known to man. But when students get sick, Health and Wellness is there to help. The problem is, few know how to find it.Health and Wellness, formally known as the Baker Infirmary, has moved.
From 1971, the infirmary was located from across the hospital on Holderness Road, but in an effort to make things more accessible for students, the University chose to move it to 16 Merrill Street, near the computer store.
Aside from a few postings, not much info was given on the move, so most students still believe they can go to Baker for their health services. Those who make the hike will be disappointed. Perhaps worse, when a sick student asks directions from passerby, odds are he or she will be directed to the old location. Even if one asks people on Merrill Street, within sight of the Health and Wellness Center, chances are they will be set on the epic journey.
There are two reasons for this. First, the Health and Wellness Center is still waiting for their big sign, according to R.N.’s Judy Macord and Edna Merrill. Right now, even the “16 Merrill St.” sign is hidden behind a tree branch. The second issue is that the entrance to the center is located on the side of the building, which makes finding the location even more difficult.
Some students still find their way over in the general direction, but don’t manage to find the center. “Human Resources, across the street, sends about five people over here every day, because students stop over there looking for us,” said Merrill.
Students can get to the Health and Wellness Center by walking down the street past Hyde and the Counseling Center, crossing the street and turning left. The computer store is a small white house on the right. They should walk past that and the center is the next house on the right.
The Health and Wellness Center provides free health services to Plymouth State students. Students are asked to call the center at x2350 to set up an appointment.
