Opportunity for all do-gooders!

There is a lot of talk about how much people would love to help humanity but no one ever has the time. Because of the effects of Hurricane Katrina and other national need, New Hampshire’s domestic supply of blood has been greatly depleted and the Red Cross is playing catch-up. On October 23 and 24, from 2-7 p.m., Plymouth State University is hosting its annual blood drive, organized this year by Meaghan Bixby, Alicia Blanchette and Becky Downs. It will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room upstairs in the HUB.

So far, the PSU blood drive has resulted in resounding success with goals set for the drive being exceeded each time. Last year, the bar was set at 160 useable units for the fall and 140 units for the spring. PSU collectively donated 163 units in the fall and 175 units in the spring.

The American Red Cross is looking for ways to keep the blood level high and one way that can help is by increasing the number of double red donations. Double red donations are double the red blood cells of a normal donation taken from one donor. The minimum requirements for a double red donation are bit higher than those for a regular one, but those students who are able to donate double are encouraged to.

The blood raised from PSU goes in New Hampshire’s state blood bank located in Manchester. It is held there until the need for it arises elsewhere in the state. The state is currently low on all blood types , which means shortages for those in need of transfusions. It is really important to donate blood if your blood type is O-negative. O- negative is the only blood type that is universally accepted by being compatible to all own blood types.

As in past blood drives, Sodexho has offered their support, donating all-you-can-eat pizza to those who donate blood. The Red Cross also provides water and juices, as well as cookies and chips to help restore blood sugar levels after giving blood.

Giving blood takes only a few hours. Basic requirements are being at least 17, weighing at least 110 lbs , have no recent tattoos or piercings and be in general good health. Each donation of blood can potentially save lives. The need is desperate and constant. Please donate when and often as you can.
