A warning to Plymouth State’s skateboarders

The Plymouth State University Police Department would like to remind everyone there is a Town of Plymouth Ordinance prohibiting the use of skateboards within the area described as Highland Street from Langdon Street to include Main Street and all town streets between Highland Street and Merrill Street. This town ordinance is enforced by both the Plymouth Police Department and the University Police Department. In addition, there is a Plymouth State University policy on the use of “Recreational Devices”

Recreational devices include, but are not limited to, skateboards, in-line skates, roller blades, roller skates, and razor scooters. Any person found in violation of the policies below may have their device confiscated by a University official.

Recreational devices operated on campus may only be used by students, faculty and staff of Plymouth State University under the following guidelines.

In full compliance with all Town Ordinances and State Laws.

On academic days between 4:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. (Unless used for transportation to and from academic/University related activities).

On non-academic days between 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.

Operated on asphalt or paved surfaces.

Recreational Devices may not be operated in any Residential Life or University facility.

Devices are to be used with caution and in such a way to ensure the safety of self and others.

Devices are not used in or on unauthorized areas including, but not limited to, brick surfaces (except when used for transportation), on tables and benches, railings, fences, walls, stairways, ramp ways, grass, gardens, parking lots, curbing and any area that could interfere with the right of safe passage or which creates excessive noise, or may potentially cause damage to property.

Areas not considered in guidelines above, include, but are not limited to, crosswalks, sidewalks, roadways that are Town Property (i.e.: Highland Street and High Street).

It is important to note that even if recreational devices are used within the guidelines of the above policy and in accordance with the town ordinance, they MUST be operated in a safe manner. This means that all efforts must be made to assure that the safety of pedestrians as well as persons operating motor vehicles is maintained. The University Police routinely hear complaints from pedestrians and drivers who have experienced unsafe and inappropriate operation by people using recreational devices. We are asking for everyone’s cooperation. If you have questions or concerns relative to the use of recreational devices, please feel free to contact the University Police Department.
