Panther’s Perspective: The Sports Insider

It may seem like fall, but winter is just around the corner; winter sports that is. Of the six fall sports, four of them made the post-season. Before we close the books on the fall season sports, take an individual look at each one.

Women’s Tennis earned the only NCAA berth this season. The team went 8-3 and 6-1 in the conference behind Rhode Island College. The team lost their first two matches and then absolutely dominated the competition. The team will compete in the NCAA Division III Tournament in May 2007. Good luck in the tournament and congratulations on the remarkable season.

The Men’s Soccer team proved to have an excellent season, as they went 10-6-2 overall and 5-2 in the conference after their LEC Championship loss to Keene State College. Steve Martus, Bryan Biederman, Dustin Moya and Felix Rosen all will be missed, as this will be their last season with the Panthers.

The football team seems to be improving ever year. Hopefully, next season the team can improve to a .500 record or better. Nonetheless, the Panthers finished this season with a 4-5 overall record and 4-3 in the NEFC (New England Football Conference). The team powered past their last two opponents to finish their season with two straight wins. Senior co-captain Dan Fallon earned Honorable Mention on the 2006 Football Gazette NCAA Division III Preseason All-America Team and several players were awarded with the NEFC Weekly Honor Roll. The Panthers will be graduating 12 seniors from their team this season, good luck and congratulations to all.

The Women’s Volleyball team did not win the LEC this year, but still had a strong season. The team went 19-13 and 4-3 in the conference, which is actually the team’s worst finish since 2001. The team started really well, winning their first five matches, but then lost their next three. They eventually fell to Rhode Island College in the semifinals of the LEC Tournament. The team will not be graduating any seniors this off-season.

The Women’s Soccer team, unfortunately, didn’t fare as well as the men. The Women were knocked out in the first round of the LEC Tournament by Keene State 1-4. The lady Panthers went 7-8-2 overall and 3-4 in the conference. Several players including: Kara Arnold, Stacy DiSabato and Morgan McQuaide were all given Little East Conference weekly honors this season. Congratulations to Kelsey McBride, Ashley Lamell, Allison Frobey, Kara Arnold, Ashley Dassatti and Kelsey MacDonald for their great season and hard work.

Field Hockey, who was ranked second in the pre-season polls, failed to make the post-season for the first time since the 1999 season. They finished their season 7-9 overall and 5-6 in the LEC (Little East Conference). On a congratulatory note, both Morgan Lemmon and Sarah Smith earned Rookie of the Week honors this season. I would like to congratulate and wish luck to the four seniors on this year’s team: Melanie Bates, Laurie Allinson, Heather Corrigan, and Amanda Spadafora.

Not much else to say about fall sports this season, I would once again like to extend my congratulations and say good luck to all the graduating seniors.
