Saw III: Jigsaw’s puzzling games reach a new level

“Saw III” takes its viewers on a whole new ride. The rules have changed and the game is played in a whole different way. Jigsaw, or John Cramer (Tobin Bell), makes his return, but this time on his deathbed.

His accomplice Amanda (Shawnee Smith) is back as well. She has stepped up to carry on the game for Jigsaw. Lynn Denlon (Bahar Soomekh), a doctor, is captured and forced to keep Jigsaw alive for the final test, while is rapidly deteriorates from a brain tumor.

While Denlon struggles to keep Jigsaw alive, there is another game going on simultaneously. Jeff (Angus Macfadyen), the second victim, is faced with multiple obstacles that are intended to teach him forgiveness. He faces various challenges in order to save himself and save the lives of other victims.

Periodically, the film flashes back to “Saw I” and “Saw II” to add new twists and answers questions from the past. During an interview with About.com, director Darren Lynn Bousman claimed, “It’s not for gore, and it’s really not for violence, it’s that you’re emotionally attached to all the characters. “Saw II” really wasn’t a scary movie. You had a bunch of people running around in a house and the only people you got to really know were Detective Matthews and Jigsaw. In this movie you know every character very well. You know ins and outs, idiosyncrasies and habits.”

A true Jigsaw fan will not be disappointed with the new game or the end of the trilogy. It has taken the contraptions and gore to a whole new level. If people thought Dr. Gordon sawing off his foot or a pit filled with syringes is gruesome, then they have not seen anything yet. “It was a suspense-thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat! I had to watch it behind my hand! It was really gory,” said senior Heidi Therrien.

Check out “Saw III” in theaters now, playing downtown at Spinelli’s Cinema or at Smitty’s in Tilton.
