2006-2007 winter sports update

Winter sports are fully underway and for the most part, they aren’t doing as well as expected. It’s still early in the season, but we’ll round up what we’ve seen so far.

The men’s basketball team netted the Cobblestone Inn Tip-Off Tournament Championship with a win over Wheaton and squeaked a win past Castleton by one point. The team will now play its next four of six games at home starting with Western Connecticut State University on Saturday in the Panther’s first LEC (Little East Conference) match-up this season.

Senior Devin Ruocco was named to the Little East Conference Honor Roll after finishing with career-high numbers against Castleton. Ruocco finished with seven three-point field goals and 29 points, while also collecting a team-high seven rebounds. He made 9-of-14 shots overall, including 7-10 for successful three-point baskets, and 4-of-5 free throw attempts. Ruocco ranks fifth in the LEC with an average of 17.3 points per game.

Mike Walcek also picked up a LEC Weekly Honor Roll award with his impressive performance in the Cobblestone Inn Tip-Off Tournament. Walcek averaged 13.5 points a game and a team-leading 8.5 rebounds in two games. He connected with 7-of-9 three point shots Walcek had a double-double in Plymouth’s opener with 19 points and 11 rebounds as PSU defeated Centenary, 82-67, and he added eight points, six rebounds and four assists in the championship game win over Wheaton.

Woman’s basketball currently stands at 1-2 so far this season and failed to earn the Cobblestone Inn Tip-Off Tournament Championship with a loss to Norwich, but picked up the consolation game against Simmons, the Panther’s only win thus far. Their next three of five games will be played at home and they will host Western Connecticut State University on Saturday.

Karly Gray was named to the LEC Weekly Honor Roll, averaging 9.5 points and a team-leading 7.0 rebounds in two games. She contributed with three assists, two steals and nine rebounds.

The men’s ice hockey team captured their second straight PAL Stovepipe Tournament title with a win over Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday. They currently stand at 2-4-1 on the season and 1-1 in the ECAC Northeast Conference.

PSU will host Salve Regina before beginning their road-trip, which includes stops at New England College, Salem State and Southern Maine University.

Chris Chambers has received an ECAC Honor for his contribution so far this season. He has scored two goals and has had three assists in two games. Chambers leads the Panthers with seven points (three goals, four assists) in five games, including one power play goal.

The women’s swimming and diving team currently stands at 1-1 this season after losing to Wellesley and then defeating Regis. The team will travel to UMass Dartmouth for the Little East Conference Championships and then will host two meets in December before taking to the road with three meets in January over winter break.

The wrestling team currently is 0-1 and hosted Rhode Island College on Wednesday in their only home match of the season. The team will travel to Southern Maine University for a tournament on Saturday. The team finished seventh of 13 teams last weekend at the Oneonta State Invitational.

Women’s ice hockey stands at 0-3 and appear to be falling through thin ice quickly. Their only win is an exhibition game against Bates where they won 7-0. The team hosted North Country Community College Wednesday and will host Oswego State on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend.

That’s all we can say about winter sports so far this season.
