As many Plymouth inhabitants may know, a Dollar Tree has moved into Plymouth on Tenney Mountain Highway just past the traffic light by Wal-Mart.
At the dollar store, there are endless possibilities: from holiday novelties, snacks, school supplies, and house wares and cooking products. Anything you could ever need you can buy for a dollar.
This reporter recently went undercover and entered the Dollar Tree, and was astonished with all of the things you could buy for a dollar. It is really a thrill of the hunt shopping experience that makes you feel like you’re getting away with something: a bargain.
Dollar Tree is the fastest growing $1 discount variety store, it has reported sales of $1.3 billion, a 22.2% increase compared to last year’s $1.079 billion according their fiscal report.
In January 2007, Dollar Tree opened its 3,219 store here in Plymouth. A year ago, Dollar Tree reported operating 2,914 stores.
So, will this growth push the well-known and popular Wal-Mart out of business? Probably not, but they should be aware that with prices lower at the Dollar Tree, penny-pinching students may be more apt to make that extra shopping stop to literally “save a buck.”
Students also started a new Facebook group called “F#$% Wal-Mart, I’m going to the Dollar Tree.” With already 48 members, it’s safe to say Dollar Tree has made an impact on these Plymouth State students as well as many others.
