It’s election time! Student government prepares for spring elctions

Election day is fast approaching and numerous students have already started down the campaign trail. The Student Government Election Committee has prepared petitions for interested students that may be picked up at the information desk in the HUB.

Sophomore Class Representative, Ezra Dalton said, “We want someone from every constituency on campus. We want people with different points of view in all areas of interest to serve on Student Senate and to be involved with the student government association.” The petition packets contain all pertinent information regarding the petition and election processes.

“Student Senate and Student Government Association are really the voice that the Administration and other non-student constituencies listen to and consult to find out what the students are thinking,”said Student Body President Peter Laufenburg. “Ergo, it is imperative that all student constituency groups are represented.”

Petition packets will be available until Friday, April 20. For those interested in campaigning, grab a packet and gain the necessary signatures to be eligible for election. For the three Student Body Representative positions, one hundred signatures are required to be eligible for candidacy. All other positions require 25 signatures.

Beginning this upcoming Monday, April 2, the Panther Print Shop will be coordinating with the Election Committee to make ten dollars available to eligible candidates in order to offset the cost of printing campaign materials.

The petition packets identify many issues for candidates to discuss over the course of their campaigns. Understand that a clear position on multiple issues is essential to those students running for the position of Student Body President. For the first time in four years, the elections committee will be holding debates for those running for Student Body President. To be included in the debate, candidates must have their packets turned in by 5P.M. on Friday, April 13 to the HUB information booth. Debates are not mandatory.

Candidate information sessions will be held at 7 P.M. on Monday, April 9 and Wednesday, April 11 in HUB 119. Please note that all petition packets are due to the HUB information booth at 5 P.M. on Friday, April 20.
